A spectacular career was ended under pathetic circumstances today when Cnrdenlo K. King once widely known ns a financier nd nowspapcr publish-o- of Boston, died ns a convict Rt ths sttite prison farm here nt the very hour that friends, learning of his approaching death, were making desperate efforts to secure his pardon. Only a legal techn cnllty p-evented his Inst hour being that of a free mon. Word that his condition was hopeless hope-less wns sent to Governor Foss at Boston this morning. The governor canvassed the members of his council coun-cil by te' -phone and seven of the eight consumed to Immediate clemency, clem-ency, but Attorney General Sw f rendered -in opinion that a pardon could not be granted by telephone. A telegram was sent to King, glvln -the assurance that n pardon would be granted tomorrow when tho conn ell convened. Dr. Emerson, medical head of the state farm, hurried wit tho news to tie hospital, but returned return-ed to announce that King was dead King wan convicted of obtaining $22,000 under f.nlso pretenses from persons who had entrusted him wit 1 funds for Investment nnd wns sentenced sen-tenced to from ten to fourteen years. Bankruptcy was followed by the discovery that his liabilities wero nearly $300,000 and nssetB iess tSon $14,000. A warrant for King's arrest was Issued, but tho financier had disappeared. disap-peared. Ho was traced to New York London, Paris and finally to Colombo Ceylon. Ho returned to Boston nnd surrendered In June, 1908. Sentence was pronounced upon nim following n dramatic recital In which King reviewed his llfo and declared thnt he was Innocent of nny wrong Intention. Ho closed by accusing Thomas W. Lawson, tho Boston financier fin-ancier of secretly fighting him and bringing him to finhnclal ruin. |
