Show J BISHOP PRESTOJV 3 FUNERAL SERVICES OF BISHOP PRESTON Many Speakers-Personal" Reminiscences-A Great Loss to Logan and the State-Impressive Services Held Impressive services were held over the body of Bishop Preston In the Logan tabernacle on Thursday. A-round A-round the casket were masses of sweet peas and gladioli and on a stand was a large cut glass bowl containing a huge bunch of purple and white sweet peas. The audience had a large sprinkling of gray heads mixed with the younger generation, for all the business houses of the city were closed clos-ed to do honor to Its former mayor and citizen. Back of the choir hung a fine portrait of the dead bishop and on the rostrum were many of the church dignitaries who had come from Salt Lake through love of their former colleague and friend. Music was furnished by the tabernacle taber-nacle choir and after a prayer by O. L. Farrell, the honorable Moses Thatcher Thatch-er was the first speaker. He said In part: "I am unable to control my emotions and listen to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. But I am not here to pay my last tribute. As long as my memory lasts, my actions will testily to my love for the pioneers and to lllshup Preston, the pioneer pio-neer Jbeloved 'above all others. I need not speak of his life wont. It is well knownto all, especially to the gray heads in tho audience. Death Is not a calamity. The Bible tells all we should know about death, and that Is much, for constant are the references to the resurrection. To have eternal life wo must have the christian prlnclplo within us. Not the personality person-ality of Christ, but his power-to withstand with-stand trials and temptations. Many and vain have been the scientific speculations on the origins of life. Tlioy are divine and Incapable of scientific demonstration. Fortified by religion William 'B. Preston came Into this valley with a few followers and built It up. He gave freely of his means both to the temple and tabernacle. Religious faith Is the key that unlocks many mysteries Unole PrestW has made a mark In Northern Utah, In the state at large and In the church that can never bo obliterated. He now passes to endless end-less dominion and eternal life. His i. mission pending the resurrection I know not, but his works still live here. Death Is Inevitable but It is not a calamity to the Latter Day Saints for it opens the door to eternal eter-nal progression." Apostle Richards was the next speaker. He had been present at the services tho day before at the Assembly Assem-bly Hall In Salt Lake City and told of tho many tributes of love and respect which had been displayed there. For him the house of mourning was more profitable than the house of feasting and he found many lessons In the life of Bishop Preston, chief of which was the fact that the joy of meeting with friends in thvnext world was no supposition sup-position but a reality. After a solo by M. J. Ballard entitled en-titled "I know that my Redeemer lives," Bishop 0. W. Nlbley told of his love and respect for Bishop Preston Pres-ton for he had been both father and friend to the Cache Valley people and he himself had .known him for over forty-five years and had always found him kind and helpful. "He had few equals In business" said tho speaker. "He stood shoulder to shoulder with Brlgham Young and Erostus Snow as a colonizer. He was always foremost In the practical affairs of lire. 1 remember re-member a meeting held In the old adobe city hall with regard to who should take charge of the construction construc-tion of tho Utah Northern railroad. All wished Brother Preston to look after the matter butheanswered:'I am willing to help but I have been called to this bishopric and I am not going to neglect that work for tho sako of making somo money.' I am much pleased to learn that the spirit of the grandfather Is still In the family for I am Just told that W. H. Preston, the grandson, is now absent on a mission In Germany." Bishop O. P. Miller then gave many personal reminiscences of the deceased who was fond of asserting his love for Cache Valley and would often say "Cache Valley Is good enough forme." Bishop Miller's remark that he had loved tho departed as a son loves a father was a touching tribute to the dead bishop. Apostle Francis M. Lyman repeated Continued on Page 8. Funeral Services of Bishop Preston Continued From Page 1 the remarks he had made 'the day before be-fore at the Salt Lake Services, reading read-ing a passage about death from 'bhe Doctrine and Covenants and commenting comment-ing diffusely on It. President Isaac Smith then announced an-nounced the closing of bhe services, thanking all for bhelr presence and sympathy. The casket and mourners mourn-ers then left the building and the Interment In-terment took place In tho city cemetery. |
