Show THE SCHOOL BOARD. B' '1 An encouraging sign with regard to H( i fair-mindedness and good sense in the BEf conducting of local public affairs is BUJ t,lc destre l,lat nas )CCD recently so BJjy widely expressed of electing a non- Br partisan school board. The election Bfs of the new board will take place on B December 2, and already leading dem- B ' ocrats and republicans have declared B ' themselves In favorof calling ageneral B mass-meeting of Logan voters to dls- BLr cuss the wisdom of adopting u non- B partisan policy In this election. It I B ' h'gh time that we came to this con- m elusion, for we are the only town In k'ialfe the state that pretends to see any connection con-nection between national politics and local school boards. I'rovo has always hld mass-primaries for each ward and even Salt Lake with all her political heresies runsacltlrens ticket In school board affairs. Another change In onr school board that is imperative Is the making of somo provision whereby the terms, of all the members shall not end at the same time. This year there are no holdovers and the city has a chance, if It Is unwise, to elect a totally new board. This would work much harm to the schools. A new board, having no connection with the policy of the old, Is very likely to branch out in a manner so radical that the schools will suffer from the sudden change. The only way to avoid this is to elect members for terms of varying length, or else to be sure to re-elect somo of the old members. Of the outgoing board two members have no desire to serve again and two would gladly continue con-tinue their services, should the city see fit to re-elect them. It will make a big mistake if it doesn't, for these two arc probably the best qualified co serve on the board both as regards education and experience in educational educa-tional matters. Their counsel and Interest In-terest have been invaluable to the city during their faithful service. It takes ability and .attainments of a high order to make a good school board member. lie cannot be too well educated. edu-cated. He should have a keen Interest Inter-est in our schools and he should be a business man with a love for the higher things in education. Logan is especially fortunate In having two college col-lege faculties and many broad-minded, public-spirited business men, frbm whom she may select men who have wholly or In part these essential qualifications. |
