Show Go to the Devil On Saturday Be Up-to-Date Dramatically Dra-matically A few jcirs ago companies all over the United States v.ero playing versions ver-sions of tho uncopyrlghted "Cyrano de Bergerac." This year In llko manner they have gotten hold of tins most sensational play that Europe possessed last winter and It Is being played from Dan to Becrsheba. It was written by a Hungarian Journalist In Budapcsth, then translated Into German, played In Vienna, and from these It has spread all over the world. The idea of the play Is so simple that It Is surprising sur-prising that no ono has ever thought of it before. To cast tho devil In the form of a modern, every-day man Is not a high achievement, and yet before Molnar did it no one realized how much of the devil lies in the heart of every man, from the middle ages down to today. Last September the play was given simultaneously In New York by two companies and the two ha,ve been giving giv-ing It there ever since. In one the pa' t of tho devil Is played by Mr. Ar-llss, Ar-llss, a well-known actor who has been In Mrs. Flake's support for some time, and in tho other by Mr. Stevens Just as there is more than one way to bo a saint, so there is more than one conception of playing the devil, and these two actors have each a very different dif-ferent conception of the part. It will be Interesting for us Logan-Itcs Logan-Itcs to see how Mr. Hall plas It next Friday. Anyone who lakes any interest in-terest In tilings theatilcal will want to see tho performance on Friday. Many will object that the company is not tlrst class and that an Inferior production pro-duction Is worse than none. They are much to be pitied. Half a loaf Is better bet-ter than no bread every time, Wc all of us want to bo in the movement and know about the latest things. What the Merry Widow hat Is to a woman, the Devil is to 'the theatre goer. Then, too, an unknown company often contains embryonic actors of promise and wo all want te say with Vienna, London and New York, "Wo have seen It." All things come to Logan and wc wish to profit by them. |
