Show H , SUPPORT OF CANDIDATES. M There are certain moments when H i our enthusiasm burns more furiously M I than at others. It we happen to be M i present at a religious discussion we B are eager to plunge in and convert all to M t our way of thinking, though we may not have been in church for years. B J Wo may not be overfond of our rcla- i lives, but let anyone attack them and our family pride immediately rises to to their defense. It Is the same way H with politics. A strongly partisan Bf paper, once having adopted a candl- ', date, will stand by him thiough thick B ' and thin, but after election will often fl ' take a saner and more Impartial view H v of that candldate'and realize that the H I man It championed was possibly not H jf endowed with all the qualities that M I go to make up perfection. Candidates K J for political positions are usually so m t ' t etger to see their ambitions realized m 'f that they are willing to promise much H'l that they often do not wish to fulfill later, and Indeed often cannot. Most men who runjlfor office a second time are more cautious In their statements, for public life makes a man ever more guarded In his utterances. Even If a a manSfalled to do all he promised In his rlrst'term we have much more confidence con-fidence in him, when he makes his assertions with regard to a second term of office. We know that ham better able to Judge of his ability to carry out the wishes of his constituents constitu-ents and that the experiences of his first term have taught hinsomc valuable valu-able lessons. We hav often commented com-mented freely on some or the mistakes In action or Judgmen of many officeholders office-holders that we ha var supported when they were running An the republican ticket. We arc glad we gave them then our unqualified support and, in the majority of cases, we should not hesitate to do so again. As the defender de-fender of a political party we arc the champions of an Its candidates and put forth every effort to secure their election, but after the election we feel we have the right to comment on the manner in which our candidates perform per-form the'duties df the office they have secured. Thoughthese comments may at times be unfavorable, by no means do they indicate tlt our judgment Is so warped that we Vo not appreciate the good that such men are doing, In spite of thotr errors, and that we would not be glad toVee them continue con-tinue for a second term. |
