Show COLLEGE HAZING. It Is greatly to credit of our Logan colleges that the question of hazing has never formed a serious part of college col-lege discipline During the eighteen years that the Agricultural college has been In existence but two cases of hazing haz-ing have occurred and neither of these has been a case In which there was the slightest danger to life or property. prop-erty. In fact they were not genuine cases of hazing, as we understand it, for they were not occasioned by upper classmen picking on under classmen, taking the nonsense out of them, but were brought about by the treasonable, treason-able, disloyal conduct of a student towards ills college, conduct which the faculty knew nothing of and which would hardly have come under their supervision. In these two cases the students, acting unwisely and hastily, preferred to give the so called traitor a cold bath rather than to make him feel the continued scorn and contempt of the student body. Their action was Illegal, as It Infringed on certain individual indi-vidual rights. This fact was clearly and forcibly pointed out to the guilty students by President Widtsoc last Wednesday morning in his public reprimand rep-rimand to them. He also told them that the college' tiad been so little troubled with hazing that no laws had ever been formulated against It, but that the college council' had passed a resolution that any student In futute connected in any way with hazing should be immediately expelled, The action of tile council Is timely, wise, and just though to many it may seem unnecessary, for, as we have before stated, Utah colleges do not know what hazing Is, and the evil that has played such havoc In so many colleges of other states, never lias and never will trouble us. Any new student, whether prep or freshman, In any college col-lege of the state, whether under church or state direction, may be absolutely ab-solutely sure when he begins Ills studies that he will receive fair and courteous treatment from all his teachers and fellow students. It is duo to the healthy development of athcictlcs that hazing Is no longer In vogue. The surplus animal spirits that often prompted the habit has found a better vent in the various sports. Nowadays the various Intellectual Intel-lectual and athletic contests of college life give a student a better idea of ills place In the college world and the Importance Im-portance of conforming to college standards than would have been accomplished ac-complished by any amount of old-fashioned hazing. |
