Show ONLY WAY TO TARIFF REVISION From tl.e New York O lobe and Commercial Advertiser, Ind't Hep, Mr. Tafts answer to Mr. Bryan's rambling tariff speech Is simple and direct. On March 4 next, It elected President, he will call Congress In extrascsslon, and when It assembles will submit a message strongly urging a revision of the tariff along lines advocated ad-vocated by him two year's ago In his Bath speech. That Is to say, he will urge not only revision but revision downward as far as It can be carried without endangering endanger-ing the principle of protection and taking away employment from American Ameri-can worklngmen. He Is opposed to all tariff levies that are blither than needed to equalize labor cost at home and abroad and give the American manufacturer a chance to continue In business. There Is small doubt that Mr. Taft expressed what is practically now the overwhelming public view with respect to the tariff. Tho country coun-try wants revision, and it wants the revision to be made along protectionist protection-ist lines. This hs and his party will give at the earliest practicable day. And what of revision If Mr, Bryan should be elected? There will be no revision at all; at least there Is small chance of It. After March 4 next.no matter what the result of the presidential presi-dential election and no matter which party controls the House of Representatives, Represen-tatives, the Senate will be Republican for at least two yean. It Is Impossible Impos-sible to get a tariff bill passed when tho two houses of Congress are not In political harmony. The subject becomes be-comes a football or politics and nothing noth-ing Is done. The only hope or revision Is in tho election or Tart and a Republican Re-publican House or Representatives. In so far as Mr. Bryan'ls able to persuade per-suade the country tint tariff revislcn Is demanded he is making an Irrefutable Irrefut-able argument for the election of his opponent. Inasmuch as consistency is a vice of little minds we wish that our local contemporary would not worry over our lack of the vice but would confine himself to the morlturl charge, If Indeed In-deed he delgos to notice our existence. exist-ence. Knowing his fondness for large words we applied the term morlturl to the democratic party on purpose to tickle his ear though we feared the Idea behind It m Ight be offensive. The truth often Is. |
