Mrs. Willlamlna Paton Fleming, curator of photographs nt Harvard observatory, ob-servatory, has been elected an honorary hon-orary member of the Royal Astronomical Astronom-ical society, and Is therefore tho first American woman te receive such distinction dis-tinction In the world of astronomy. Only two other women, Lady Hugglns, widow of Sir William Hugglns, and Miss Agnes M Gierke, have been granted a similar distinction. Tho Dr. Henry Draper fund, cdtabllshod In 1886 by his widow, Mrs. Anna Palmer Draper, of Now York, mado possible the elaborate elab-orate work of photographing tho constellations, con-stellations, and Mrs. Fleming, at the head of this department, has achieved magnificent results. One of Mrs. Fleming's Flem-ing's valuable contributions to tho field of astronomy is the Draper catalogue, which contains a classification of 10,000 stars, showing tho position and brightness of each. Of the 98 fifth type stars which are known to the astronomical world Mrs. Fleming discovered nil but IB. Since 1887 thero havo been 11 new stars discovered, dis-covered, and of this number the location loca-tion of eight stands to the credit of Mrs. Fleming.
