Show Conference Held at Smithfield Distinguished Men Visit Farrell Farm, Sudden Death, and Other News. SMITHFIELD, Aug. HI, 1900. The Benson Stake Conference was held here Saturday and Sunday last, and was a success both from the Interest developed and the general attendance. Saturday was devoted to wclcome-ing wclcome-ing the visiting members and reports from the Bishop and olllcers. In the atternoon, some general business was despatched and then Apostles Penrose and Clawson talked on stake affairs. On Sunday the attendance was very large and the following program was rendered at the morning services: Singing Choir. Duet Sisters Dangcrlleld and Maud Roskelly. Duet Hlllyard Sisters Apostles Clawson and Penrose addressed ad-dressed tho meeting on practical everyday duties. The afternoon services consisted of an anlhcn by the Choir. Solo Mrs. Rose Hill. Solo "The Seer,'' Wm. Pllklngton, leader ot the choir, assisted by the choir in the chorus. Address by Apostle Penrose on "Tho Duties of tho People In Temporal affairs." This discourse was a strong, practical talk full of common sense advlco and very much appreciated by tho large congregation The choir rendered a beautiful anthem and then the choir and con gregation Jolned-ln singing that rousing rous-ing hymn "The Spirit of God like a lire Is burning." At the close of the meeting Apostles Penrose and Clawson, Bishop Wood-roof, Wood-roof, Elder Roskelly and Wm. Pllklngton Pllklng-ton drove on a tour of Inspection about the city, visiting tho reservoir of the city water sjstcm. The visitors were highly pleased with tho work and praised the progressive spirit shown by the city In developing Its own water supply, In the evening there was a conjoint meeting of the Benson Stako Young Men's and Young Ladles' Association. Associa-tion. After singing by the choir a quartet composed of Geo. Douglas, Geo. Done Jr , B. Llndqulst and FJcl-sted, FJcl-sted, sang. Miss Millie Nllson sang a solo and J. II. Peterson lectured on "The Life of Christ." Mrs. Boynton gaen short talk. Apostlo Clawson gave a practical talk on religious duties. The choir deserves great praise for the well rendered anthems. Some of their songs were especially beautiful and much appreciated. Distinguished Visitors. Clias. J. Brand and C. S. Scofleld, of tho agricultural department at Washington, Wash-ington, I). C, In company with Pros. Kerr's private secretary John Stevens, called on Bishop Geo. L. Farrell several sever-al days ago and tho party drove to tho tatter's arid farm at Peterboro. Tho visitors were shown Mr. F.irrell's fall wheat and barley, of which lie lias over GOO acres, and hlsalfalfa, of which his second crop was cut and put up ready for stacking. Tho visitors were also shown plats of alfalfa from d I Herein Her-ein nations sown In Mav that now stands eighteen inches high and Is nearly ready for hay. Tho distinguished distinguish-ed gentlemen were moio than pleased with what they saw and pronounced tho wheat and bailey tho finest they ever saw grown on arid land, Judging the barley at 7G or 80 bushels to the acre and wheat at 35 or 40. Messrs. Brand and Scofleld took photographs of the grain, tho whole farm, and the surrqundlng country. They also took a snapshot of Up. Farrell In his wheat Holds and declared him tho best farm authority they, had ever met In their travels. Tho gentlemen drovo to Logan and were particularly inteiest-ed inteiest-ed In what they saw at the DanWsen Mfg. Co. Beforo leaving this section Messrs. Brand and Scofleld declared Cache Valley to lie the linest In tho western country. ' General Items. On Monday tho Nielsen family received re-ceived a telegram from Lcthbrldgc, Canada saying that Gwcn Casar had died very suddenly the day before and asked that arrangements be made for funeral at Smithfield on Thursday. No further particulars were given. Lorenzo Toolson has had the plumbing plumb-ing work In his new residence finished and the Job Is one ot the finest In town. The sink and accessories in the kitchen arc very neat and convenient, having hot and cold water, as also docs the bath room. A. J. Beverldge, plumber, has several sever-al line Jobs in town and has llnlshed plumbing the residence of F. F. Shrives, of'Franklln, putting In bath-loom bath-loom fixtures and sink with hot and cold water. The, Ballam orchestru.of lljdel'ark, has engaged tho Hlllyard opera house for ono year. This will assure the lovers ot good dance music that all dances will be agreeable and enjoyable. enjoy-able. Dance every Saturday night. Fred Sandberg Is back from his ranch for n few days, work being suspended on account ot rain. Fred has had the misfortune to loso four head of horses this summer, but has received notice from the patent office of-fice at Washington that his Invention, combination beet machine, has passed the Inspector of patents and a patent will bo Issued soon. Mr. and Mrs. Seth Chambers will leave about the first week In September Septem-ber for Chicago whero Mr. Chambers will commenco his second year In dentistry at the Chicago Collcgo of Dentistry. Mr. Chambers has Just received re-ceived his standing In the first year's examination and a congratulatory letter let-ter from the examiners. Ills standing stand-ing averaged 07, a very high average for freshman year. James Chambers, whilo driving a header on tho sido hill on his ranch at tho west sido of tho valley, was upset, and his right foot Injured. He is ablo to bo about again. John Hlllyard had tho misfortune to get his foot underneath tho foot of his horse, but escaped with a slight sprain and bruise. Mrs. Osborn, who has been visiting at Mrs. R. B. Thornley's tho past six weeks, returned to Salt Lako city last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Bennlon.of Vernal.aro visiting Mrs. Bennlon's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nelson, for a few days Mrs. Julia Raymond Is tho happy mother of a fine boy. Both mother and child aro doing well. Miss Veda Chambers has returned from Wellsvllle. where she has been visiting Miss Maughan. Parley Chambers and Wm. Coleman left for Chicago Monday expecting to bo gono about three weeks. Mrs. Mlnnlo Nllson is having her homo repainted and beautifully decor-acd decor-acd inside. Mrs. Snowball, of Salt Lake City, Is visiting her brother, If. T. Peterson. Mrs. Lorenzo Toolsen gave birth to a tlnn son this morning. All's well. |
