Show Walter Johnson Kills Himself Young Man of Hyrum On Big Spree Gets Despondent and Suicides. Act Committed with Revolver at Home of a Brother Thursday Morning. HYRUM, January 10, llW.-Thls little city was thrown Into quite nn excitement early this morning by the spread of the news that Walter Johnson, John-son, aged 29, had killed himself about 8 o'clock. With a .78-calibrc revolver he shot himself an Inch and a half below the heart, and lived about ten minutes after. The deed was done at the home of his brother, Niels Johnson, where the young p'Ti had spent the night. Young .K .ison attended a dunce the ovenlng before, and went to his brother's home with the intention of starting from there for the canyon early this morning. After arising and while breakfast was being prepared, pre-pared, he stepped into an adjoining room and committed the deed After the shooting he lived about ten minutes. min-utes. Apparently Johnson realized what he had done, as he asked his brother, who rushed to him immediately immedi-ately after the shootlng.to do what he could for him, but before medical aid arrived he expired. Liquor The Cause. An inquest was held this morning before Justice J. L. Jensen and a Jury composed of Messrs. O. H. Anderson, Joseph I. Nielsen and Neils A. Jepp-sen. Jepp-sen. Dr. Cantrll, Joseph Hultz.'and Mr. and Mrs Nells Johnson were examined ex-amined and the Jury rendered a verdict ver-dict of "suicide from despondency and excessive use of alcoholic liquors." It developed at the Inquest that Johnson hod been on a spree for about two wtcks. He had used his own money and then borrowed little sums wherever ho could. It Is said that ho had anally became despondent and while in this mood committed tho deed. Many- Rumors. Many rumors of more or less accuracy accur-acy are going the rounds. There are those who insist that Johnson's drinking drink-ing and tinal death Is the result of having been Jilted by a young lady with whom ho had been keeping company. com-pany. Others Insist that it was debt alone, and there are those who attribute attri-bute It to naught but drink. However, it seems probablo that Johnson must have dwelt some time upon tho Idea of suicide for at tho dance which he attended Wednesday night ho bado a number of people "good-bye" In a way that Indicated more than tho usual formality that is In that word. Hut Inasmuch as Johnson John-son left no written word explaining his contemplated deed and did not offer of-fer any word of explanation after tho shot the exact cause that led to his terrible act can only be conjectured. Had $1,000 Insurance. The sulolde was a son of former city sexton James Johnson and a brother of Mrs. Christian Thompson. His father is an invalid. Tho young man carried 11,000 insurance with the New York Life. i The Funeral. The funeral services will be held Saturday (todaj) at "J p. m. at the home of his brother In law, Christian Thompson. Another Death. Yesterday morning Wm. II. Green, an old and highly respected resident of this city died very suddenly, apparently apparent-ly from tho bursting of a blood vessel. lie had been out feeding his stock whep tho accident happened which cost him his life. Como immediately to the house ho told his wife ho was, and expired in about fifteen minutes. Ho leaves a wife and fivo married children to morn his loss. Two sons and a daughter are rcsldcuts of Idaho. All acquaintances will miss llro. Green and his genial disposition. Filneral services will be held Sunday at twelvo o'olock. |
