Show TO THE MORMON. In Utah the willful or Ignorant violation vio-lation of the law by one man has ever resulted In the whole pcoplo being held up to scorn. And it Is equally true that the sllghcst unfortunate circumstance in tho life of an individual individ-ual Mormon has invariably been the occasion for a greater rumpus and hullabaloo generally than a half do7.cn extraordinary Incidents in which flcn-tiles flcn-tiles figured. These facts should Impress Im-press upon every Mormon the necessity neces-sity of ever being on guard against, doing even the slightest thing that might be questioned. Though the questionable act Is done without deliberate de-liberate wrongful Intent, It will bo construed to the oxtremest disadvantage disadvan-tage not only of himself but the entire populace, and life will bo made a bur den by the continual harangue of those in Utah who, however honestly or dishonestly they may be working, aro now making life in this state a distasteful dis-tasteful existence not only to 'the Mormon but to at least half the Gentiles. Gen-tiles. No deliberate violation of law Is to be condoned on tho part of any man, and Ignorance of tho law must ever meet with a certain degree of censure, but there is not just excuso for burdening the whole people for tho sins or mistakes of the few. Yet is the result when, perchance, any Mormon Mor-mon has gone wrong, hence the suggestion sug-gestion that it behooves every good man to be on his guard lost In carelessness careless-ness he unwittingly do that which may result moie to the hurt of his neighbor, neigh-bor, his church, his Utah, than to himself. The Mt. Sterling ballot matter Illustrates Il-lustrates the idea. Though few even of the most strenuous antls In this county bellcio I'rcs. I'arklnsjn and A. M. Israelson guilty of dollbcratc vio lation of the law, or Dial In accepting two ballots from an clecMon Judge they did so with the Intent usually a;-tribute a;-tribute to the priest in politics, still i the rabid organ of the autis says the church and Utah U all wrong llc- cause a warrant for the arrest of Messrs. Mes-srs. I'arklnson and Israelson was not Immediately sworn to, the Un-American organ saysCacho county Ison trial, and the whole people are held up to .corn. Not only that, but It Is understood under-stood that the Incident is to be made to serve a great purpose at Washington, and already it hus been heralded far and near as a reprehensible act, a dastardly dastard-ly crime, splendidly Illustrative of the decadent conditions In Utah, Finally, after an obstreperous Sal t Laker butted In here and filed a complaint to which the accused answered in a preliminary hearing and were permitted to go without bail, the failure to place tho accused under heavy bond Is contrasted contrast-ed with other instances where the action ac-tion was opposite, and It Is urged that I'rcs. I'arkinson and Israelson wcro favored because of their ecclesiastical position that eculeslasts arc above law, etc, etc Though the ballot Incident was evidently, evi-dently, and confessedly on the part of strenuous antls, nothing moro than an extremely foolish, terribly careless, act of men who It seems should have known better, the church, the people, the whole situation In Utah Is raked fore and aft, and to the nation is presented pre-sented columns calculated toproveour dishonor. Hecause the average cltl-sf.cn cltl-sf.cn of this county did not care to father fath-er a complaint In a case of which ho knew little or nothing more than hearsay, the people are designated as cowards and serfs and Cache county Is said to bo on trial. Hecause theso accused gentlemen when finally brought before a magistrate were released re-leased on their own recognizance, a consideration fnvaralably granted men of character and standing when the case against them is not more than' a misdemeanor, the claim of favoritism for tho priesthood, strict construction construc-tion for the layman, and injustice fpr the antl is made , Tub flKiMiiiLUUN merely points out that under such conditions, conditions that havev and will continue to pro-vail pro-vail in Utah, the Mormon owes it to those about him, his church, and his state, more than to himself, to be careful that he docs not do that which may be misconstrued to his disadvantage dis-advantage as a Mormon, for all must suffer for his commission or omission. |
