Show OF NO VALUE AS COLLATERAL. Mother Had Taken Effective Steps to Prevent Watch Being Pawned. An Impecunious young lawyer, whoso lack of clients has caused him to make frequent trips to the pawn shop, told the following story on himself: him-self: "My mother gave me a gold watch, which was often of more service to me as a pledge than as a timepiece. It grieved her to know that I made such use of her gift, and several times she furnished the means i redeeming re-deeming it. "One day, when I had gone particularly particu-larly long with no visible means of telling the time, my mother demanded demand-ed the pawn ticket. Within a week she handed mo my watch, and, as usual, not to pawn It again. But the necessity soon returned, and I had recourse re-course to the loan office. Tho pawnbroker pawn-broker glanced at the timepiece and opened the Inner care. "His manner became formal. 'Where did jou get this watch?' he Inquired. In-quired. 'It was n present,' I replied. "'Well, I'm going to hold It until you can prove It's yours,' he declared, and then, by way of explanation: 'I suppose you didn't read what's engraved en-graved on the case?' "'No,' I said, faintly.
