Show BOY CAUSES A WRECK. Displayed Wrong Signal and a Collision Collis-ion . Resulted. Through the alleged interference of a messenger boy, a wreck was caused on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad east of Cumberland, Md., In which four employes em-ployes of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad rail-road were killed and three injured. The wreck was due to the displaying display-ing of a false signal, giving a clear track for eastbound passenger train No. 10, when in the next blockahead there was standing on the track a caboose ca-boose and two engines. The passenger passen-ger train was drawn by two engines, and these crashed through the caboosa and engines which obstructed tha track. It is charged that a messenger boy named Turner, who was in the bloch tower when No. 10 came along, and, hearing the engineer's whistle foi clear tracks, pulled a lever, giving him a clear signal. The operator had, it ia explained, previously set' the signal a) danger. While' his attention was being be-ing devoted to communicating with the block station, the boy, it is alleged, pulled the lever that gave the oncom. ing train the signal that it had a cleai block ahead, and the tower operatoi was not aware of what was done until the crash came. |
