Show SENATORS CHOSEN. REED SMOOT ELECTED BY UTAH LEGISLATURE. Clarke Succeeds Jones in Arkansas, Piatt is Re-elected, While Former Secretary Alger Will Represent Repre-sent Michigan. Apostle Reed Smoot has been chosen to succeed Senator Rawlins in the United States senate. In the senate the vote- was: Apostle Reed Smoot, 10; Senator Joseph L. Rawlins, 6;' Governor Heber M. Wells, 2. . In the tower house the vote stood: Smoot, 36; Rawlins, 4; Wells, 4. Representative Willis E. Robison was absent on account of a death in his family, cutting down the Democratic Demo-cratic vote by one for Senator Rawlins. Raw-lins. ! In the senate, George N. Lawrence and Hoyt Sherman of Salt Lake voted for Governor Wells. In the house Representatives J. J. Stewart of Salt Lake, William E. White of Piute, E. C. Lee of Carbon and E. P. Evans of Summit county voted for Governor Wells. Clarke Succeeds Jones. In the Arkansas legislature the contest con-test between James P. Clarke and James K. Jones resulted in a victory jfor the Clarke forces, as. Clarke received re-ceived 77 votes on joint ballot, or nine more than necessary to elect. Tom Piatt Re-elected. The two houses of the New York legislature, in separate session, selected select-ed Senator Thomas C. Piatt to succeed suc-ceed himself as United States senator.
