Show TILLM AN-M'LAURIN FEUD BREAKS OUT IN THE SENATE. Mcliarln Denounces Democratic Leaders and Is Challenged to Resign. The senatechamber was tbe scene of a highly dramatic episode Monday when Senator Tillman of South Caro-lna Caro-lna challenged his colleague, Senator McLaurin, to resign with him on the spot, in order, to use his own language, that they might be able to "wash their dirty linen at home.'' Mr. McLaurin did not take up the gauge. The incident was the directsequel of the very bitter sontroversy which arose between the senators in South Carolina Caro-lina last spring. Mr. McLaurin arose to a question of personal privilege and proceeded to explain what he charged was a conspiracy to discredit him in nis own state for acts and views which did not meet the approval of certain Democratic leaders. He declared that he was being humiliated, and, accord- ing to public prints, was to be exclud- ed from the Democratic caucus because he had acted upon certain public issues in a way which he considered was to the best interests of the country and the people of his state. Senator Hoar questioned, in view of the fact that both senators had tendered ten-dered their resignation, whethereither bad the right to address the senate, and the matter was referred to the committee on election and privileges to determine their status. It is possible possi-ble both seats will be declared vacant. |
