Show A Eillion And a Half Washington, March 4. Con-gress Con-gress adjourned at noon today, by limitation. Mr. Allison, chairman of the committee on appropriations, made a statement regarding the amount of money appropriated by the present congresses compared com-pared with the appropriations of the Fifty-sixth cc Tigress. The total appropriation by the present pres-ent congress, he stated ,was $i,-554, $i,-554, 108,518, .as compared with $1,440,489,438 for the Fiity- sixth congress. It was a curious but necessary thing, he said, to .make this comparison more in: detail than by a mere statement of aggregates. The first and J most important item included in this statement for the present congress con-gress is an appropriation of $50,130,000 for the Panama canal which he said, accounts for nearly one-half of the incrtase. There is also, he said, an aggregate ag-gregate appropriation for the postoffice department ,of $153, 4ol,4S9 for the next fiscal year, as compared with $1 38,000,000 (for the current year, making a difference of more than $15,000, 000 in excess of the appropriations appropriat-ions of the last congress for the postal service. This he explained, explain-ed, arises from the enormous increase in-crease in expenditures caused by j increased postal business. Then, ,too, he said, the rural free delivery deliv-ery service required large sums. ' There was, he said, a smaller '.deficennvthen there has been in many years in the postal receipts, 1 as compared, with the expenditures. expendit-ures. He called attention to the ;fact that last congress passed no I liver and harbor bill. In the 'first session of this congress,' he 'said, $27,000,030 was appropriated appropri-ated for rivers and harbors,' in addition to which $20,000,000 I was appropriated in the sundry 'civil bill for carrying out contracts. con-tracts. He said that while it appeared ap-peared that the appropriations of this congress have been largely in excess of those of the last con gress, the increase is chiefly made up of three items, namely, the ! $50,000,000 for the Panama canal, the in:reased appropriation of $60,000,000 for the postal serv ice, and the river and harbor appropriations. |
