Show The important event of the past week has been the report -sent to Washington by Admiral Dewty. of his success at Manilla. ' Like the report of other great warriors it was brief but contained a world of meaning to the expectant A-merican A-merican people, For days' they had been waiting for a report of his bold move upon the Spanish flotilla at'the Philippines and when his brief but favorable report was carried by lightning to every part of this broad land the peoDle shouted their applause in thunderous thunder-ous tones. From sea to sea a-cross a-cross mauntain, plain and valley reverbrated the joyous shouts of a people whose every sympathy is in this stuggle for freedom. Not simply because the Philippines had been taken, did they shout, but because another bold step had been successfully taken for the freedom of a people who for long years have groaned beneath the iron heil of dispotism. Their cries are no longer in vain. The civilization civili-zation of the closing century says they shall be free and with this country for their champion and right on our side we shall triumph for our cause is just. , |
