Show University Takes Up Dp City Smoke Problem The University is now participating actively in the study of the smoke problem of Salt Lake City An immediate immediate immediate imme imme- diate result is that there is promise that the efforts of the various clubs and leagues concerned with the problem problem problem lem will now become unified with the scientific procedure necessary to arrive arrive arrive ar ar- ar- ar rive at any satisfactory solution The University is able to undertake the work by virtue of the cooperative cooperative cooperative opera co tive arrangement existing between the metallurgical research department of the University and the Utah station station station sta sta- tion of the National Bureau of Mines l This operative co-operative arrangement was vas made with a view to the investigation of the low-grade low ore problem of the state But its pressing importance forced the smoke problem forward for attention One of the School of Mines fe fellows lows Dr Isham was assigned to the task of finding a fool proof fuel one that could be burned any place without producing smoke and has been working to that end for several months Now comes the announcement announcement announcement announce announce- ment of still further operation co-operation with the national government The bureau at Pittsburg which has accomplished much for clear air in that smoky city undertakes to examine specimens of coal sent on from here with a view to determining conditions under which the coal represented will coke and the possible value of the products by-products Slim mim- Continued on Page 3 3 o o- o v 0 UNIVERSITY TAKES UP CITY SMOKE PROBLEM Continued from Page 1 mated in the process The assistance is especially significant since the judgment of experts who have studied the situation in Salt Lake City is that heavy volumes of smoke and soot can be kept from our otherwise pure air only by eliminating soft coal as a fuel by burning a fool proof preparation which will probably prove to be the soft coal after having been subjected to a cooking process though not necessarily reduced to coke The work of the expert chemists at Pittsburg Pitts Pittsburg Pittsburg burg will complement the work of the local chemists and hasten conclusions I The national government moreover undertakes to send one of its expert economists to Salt Lake City whose work is to be that of determining by actual investigation the effect of the smoke poured into the air here upon health and the cost of living and the economic feasibility of requiring the people of the city to use a fool foolproof foolproof proof fuel This expert has already been selected and will come to Salt Lake City shortly as soon as word from the Bureau of Mines l station here tells him that conditions are ready for his work Dr D.
