Show ""TO THE FRONT. Lehi Singers at the Contest THEY CARRY OFF TUB PALM. And are praised for their good singing. riio M. I. A. stako musical contest on Snturday ovcnlngwns ndolightfuIafTalr. Following is tho Judges' report: Four choirs tool: part In tho competition, competi-tion, viz.. organizations from talil, Alpine, Spanish Fork nnd Payson. All inmlo crcdltnblo showings, but Lehi undoiilitly tho best. J. h. Gliib Is tho conductor of this body of slngcrx, nnd ho has good roison for prldoin 11. Tho vuiuiiiv wi luiiu wnn iiicuiuni, uui iiiu quality was good, and the parts wcro well balanced, tho attack fair, tliu liody well in control of tho conductor nnd tho general result was very good. Tho Alphicrholr, of which I. It. Vance is the conductor, has been organized only n couple of months, but showed that it has snmogood voices. Its principal prin-cipal lack is Homo moro pood male voices tenors nnd basses. It has plenty of good mipranos nnd altm. Tho fipani'h Fork organisation did good work. It has plenty of power nnd iliu parts wcro fairly well balanced, but a tendency lo harshness was noticeable, especially In tho second pelce, If we wero lo Biigges t particular points for attention, they would bo attack and light nnd shade. Brother W. T, James has a good choir, however, nnd evidently works faithfully with it and takes ft deep interest in Its success. Brother Joseph Douglas took chargo of ft body formed by combination of the choirs of both wards of Payson. Hero agrljj tlio lack of malo voices was very perceptible, especially tho tenors. The trebles and altos wcro fine nnd blend bcMitifully. Tho work of tho choir would havo been bettor appreciated had the.ro been more contrast between their selections, which wre, unfortunately, both in the mime key andthesamatimc. Let us hero, say to conductors: Cultivate Cul-tivate smoothness nnd roundness of tone, blending and balance of parts. preoiBion nnd light and shade, and you will find rcmarkablo improvement in your work . Wo cannot but say a word in this connection in regard lo Brothor II, E. Giles, the director of music for tha M. L A. of this Ftako. IIo is enthusiastic nndindcfatigadle; nndtho musical interests in-terests of tho Stnko bto greatly Indebted to his industry and ability tor tho marked mark-ed progress made in this direction in tho last few years.
