Show law enforcement threatens racing to i tace ace or not to race seems to be one of the hot issues in the state of utah in the recent legislature a horse racing bill was introduced the senate passed the bill and sent it on to the house of representatives and it was here that thai the bill was killed for a few weeks certain groups brought pressure to bear and the horsemen felt that they had a chance of putting the bill through to become law but after much haggling the bill was killed in the house of representatives reports from stilt salt lake lake city and ogden indicated that some of the big business men were dead set against horse racing of any kind and in particular in those cities claiming that during the race lace meet their bustness business took a 1 substantial drop others took the view that horse racing Is gambling and comes under the head of vice and their voice was certainly heard in the ahe state capUt ii laue bor nothing was heard from the outlying ayi ng counties councle a up state scafe and the counties south of sevier could just as well have been in another state as tar far as their opinions here were it Is a well kno known wn fact act that the annual race meet liere here in kanab la Is the biggest event ot at the year and for that matter in about sixty other small communities in the jl e state the town merchants will verity verify that they do more business in those three days than any other three days in the whole year auto courts are full the restaurants do a booming business money circulates freely the purchasing power of the towns people increases and in general the town does a thriving business those of the town who reap no monetary gain from the three days of festivity enjoy spending a few dollars and realize a pleasant change in the spirit of competition and joint celebration gloom has settled around the horse racing association with the par part mutual definitely out no one seems to kno know w just exactly what the procedure will be this year with orders front from gov lee attorney general vernon called into salt lake city all of the county and city law officials and in tiona were issued that they were to strictly enforce the law regarding gambling at the local race meets this leads leada to lower gross receipts and lower purses say what you will its money that will bring the better horses to these meets without a reasonable monetary return the hor horse hoise se men will take their strings else where 1 some say that a small county race with the gate receipts going tor for purses will solve the race meet problem that may be but its dollars to doughnuts th that t the town will vill not be filled as it h has a s been in the past years and the quality of races will ie be far below what it has been this then to is the picture horop racing a sport centuries old Is tolerated in n utah but you I 1 are not allowed to wager on the outcome what we would like to know la is it there Is to be no part betting to assist in some local worthy cause li haw ow are we going to tax the pa pocket ceet bets made in the crowd it if this Is go inga arid we know it doe sAnd why draw betting |
