had bad an idea that 1 I could find the place where my parents were camped and started on my way As I 1 hurried along I 1 camo came near tile the 8 salt alt lake theatre people were going to the show lies hesitating I 1 tating 1 I stepped up to a lady and hor her escort and asked if she would please direct use me to the first ward schoolhouse school house my child sho she said you havo have no business on tho the street althis time of dayi day however she directed me and I 1 hurried on as bastas fast aa I 1 could go at length I 1 reit reached ched the school house hous e but bat there was no light in the building in the houns next to the school building I 1 could see ali a light glit so I 1 hurried along and tapped at the door I 1 knocked repeatedly but could get no response so I 1 returned to the school house where I 1 cound the door standing ajar it was dark but I 1 walked in tooling feeling my way along the wall until I 1 came to a bench where I 1 sat down to wait until day dawned occasional cas casio ional naly luring during the night I 1 heard board noises which seemed theome to come from the farther corner of the room but lit in tho the darkness I 1 could c seo see nothing and feeling strange and timid I 1 remained quiet but when morning came I 1 found I 1 was not the only occupant of that room huddled or er in the opposite corner were some danish immigrants they smiled as they recognized me as aa wo we had traveled on oil the same train at daylight I 1 wont out but doors and sat on the stoop the abin sun came up and people began amov ing about blie city power looms to operate west of the mississippi river I 1 intended going to work with my illy father lit in the factory but was prevailed upon to stay in salt bait lake city and assist with the house we were ver very y comfortable compared to most moat of 0 the people who were living in dixie at that time my father and I 1 worked in the factory the year 1867 to 1871 slid and all that time we did not see ono one cent of money lit in tact fact there was no money in tho the country nye roc lavod cloth for or our lab orthie was called factory pay we exchanged cloth for everything we needed it if wo we wanted fruit wo we traded cloth for or it people came all over the country to trade their products for or cloth some borne brought butter AM choose cheese others brought corn and wheat and many other things which we needed and wo we were glad to trade cloth for at this ti almo mo 1867 the first orchards of dixie wore were beginning to bear fruit one day a man passing through tile the country bought two bushels of 0 peaches from us and gave us a dollar ifor or I 1 them wo we simply did not know what to do with that cash I 1 believe we did buy bay some postage stamps with some of it this was the first and last lase money enthat ithac I 1 saw while living in dixie I 1 worked worded in fit the ho washington factory until june 21 1860 1869 when I 1 married george mace blace we journeyed to salt lake city to be married my husbands sister jane and her husband accompanied us wo we wore were gore the best beat part of one month going and coming in tile the year 1871 my husband with a tile the course of erection ero cllon tho the rock walls were just jast about 11 hale tit laid up we traveled by borso hoi so loam and wagon when wo wn arrived we moved into tho the danab kanab fort thoro there were still a colell fa families millos living in its tile tho rest ot of tile tha people had moved onto city lots lit in tile the te these lots lota were sold to the holders ifor less than six dollars each wo we lived lit in the fort foil the winter ot of 1873 my illy first arst child wits was lorn born in the west room of the fort the room nearest tile little building which was waa used for lor both church and school house all my seven children havo have been born in fit kanall lit in days wo we had no doctors lit in the country A good neighbor woman assisted me in each contine anent tit in fact a doctor never stepped into my lily hoino until all my lily children had reached maturity matin it in tile tho spring we bought a city lot and fenced it with willows the year following 1874 we built a wallow shack aback in which to live wo we set cedar posts in the ground and wove allows through them the insole wo we lined with ana and plastered almi clay the tiro fire iliac not paid anything tor for the tha lot we took it back and gained possession of the two room house the first summer in kanab wo we raised a garden with corn beans squash and onions we did not have fl lour so we made bread sn in the following way wo we graded corn in ill the roasting oar car season mixed it with cream salted and baked it when the corn coin was ripe wo we ground it tup title 1 3 still standing fitter after moro more than twenty five years we had a few head of cattle that wo we brought with us front from dixie the grass was knee high all over tile country and our cattle increased inci eased rapidly until soon we had find a small herd prom from those these we got the winters supply of ment meat milk and butter there was no money ni oney in the country and we could bof not sell cell the surplus cattle so they were no source of income to us we broucht somo some young fruit trees with us front from dixie these wele set set out and I 1 think this was the third orchard set act out lit in kanala kanab my husband was a good carpenter and craded chis labor to people for things that wo we needed rie eded wo we usually 11 had id tho alio necessities of life I 1 remember ber once he had made me some buckskin moccasins when ply my shoes wore out lie ho often made them ifor the children paved roads have taken the place of blazed trails and tough rough wagon roads today one can ravel met in two hours the same distance that it took us its eight days to cover on oil june 21 1919 my illy husband and I 1 celebrated our golden wedding lii hil anniversary niver sary during my illy life I 1 have had few sorrows and many joys except for occasional visits to rela relatives tives in other otylior parts of tho the state I 1 have hare lived lit in kanab for the last 62 years
