other things for having been tried and acquitted three times taffies for murder and wants vanta to got along in tho the business without working too much for the state must bo like a good general ito iia must always arrange his plans so fl to cover his retreat homo omo thieves are so eo constituted that they do hotl not mind going to jail for a live five or so BO punishment of that sort has haa no terrors for them and while liberty Is sweet to every man they take their me merlaine dlaine and rather enjoy prison life I 1 aldaya had bad a horror of df I 1 going to prison but it was never quite strong enough to load lead me to become honest bonest when the big door closed behind me every time that I 1 entered jail it gave me achill a chill and I 1 never got over it until I 1 was out in the sunshine agnlin so it naturally hn happened that when I 1 was wall in active business buBl ness it was my special desire to do everything in my power to keep out of jail I 1 alwa always s paid anida d great deal more attention 0 o laying plans for a getaway get away after a robbery than to the work itself for that reason I 1 I 1 used to get into quarrels with the men I 1 worked with they obey did not nat like my caution and I 1 have puffed many times aimes out of what looked easy jobs just because I 1 could notsie bot seo my way dear to escape it was my notion that ay anny bit of work would not pay no matter how much money molloy there was in it it it were followed by a ten years contract with wath the state stata in the stone breaking line tt it was this trait of mind which led me into the kingston national bank robbery at the timo time when I 1 ran this trick I 1 wag waa a fugitive from justice with the charge of killing ned wallace hanging over me so naturally 1 I had to ga go a bt slow my atte attention nilon was attracted to the bank by a story in ono one of tho the papers about a largo large sum of money which had been deposited in its vaults by some company that was going iso h build a railroad and a water works I 1 know knew that this money was going to remain in the bank for several weeks so I 1 sent for dill bill noble who wile was at that bai time running a gambling house in east houston street near broadway dill bill was always ready to take a hand with mo me because he understood tinder stood my ways and I 1 did his and wo we never had had any trouble it was lust just what dill bill panted for hla his bank roll had bad been hit fery hard I 1 had not been out of the bouse in tho the daytime because the murder of wallace was very hot and I 1 knew that the coppers were making a lively chase for me I 1 arranged with bill for him to do all the preliminary work ile he turned a book agent on short notice which gaga aavo him a chance to visit the bank without exciting suspicion while bill was talking books he be sized up tho the vault and saw that the door was an old fashioned affair with a now new and intricate lock which had luat just come out and was believed to be burglarproof burglar proof the next step was to find out who closed up the vault this was a very delicate thing to pick up without being inquisitive the tact fact that dill had to deliver some adre books at the bank opened tho way to get this information ile ho kept tab on the bank for several days and found out the time that each man left but he be could not iw gee from the street who had charge of the vault when the books came bill waited until banking hours were over ovar before going to deliver them ile Hs found several of the clerks clarka busy clog cloa las tip P the bobki beoka aud and he show showed d that ko wits was a genuino book ag agent ent by starting in to talk against time bill knew what he was after and he got lt it after waiting an hour dill bill tho the cashler cashier whose name was roll poll looked locked up tho the vault ile he used two sets of keys one for the inner door to the small email safe and tho the other for the big iron outside door ile he put tho the keys in different pockets poc keta dill bill waa close enough to tho the keys to remember them it if he saw them again dill bill followed the cashier to his home which was in tho the suburbs in a neat two story cottage cattage and the preliminary work was over it would have been been easy to ta take kethe the next step which would bo be to get gei the keys and open the safe cafe that Is whit what some thieves would have done but I 1 had a better trick up my sleeve which came out of my caution and would aid us in making escape easy it was lev developed eloped in this way the same night bill found out about the keys wo we made a call at cashier bolls bells house after tho the family had retired wo we did not care to disturb their slumbers so BO reentered wo we entered the house bouse through a parlor window bill had located the room in which the cashier slept and I 1 went there noiselessly either the cashier or his wife had bad a beautiful snore and I 1 need not have been so BO careful in my operations I 1 found the cashiers trousers removed the keys heys and returned to tho the street where dill bill was wag waiting we went to a secluded spot where it was safe to flash a lantern there I 1 took a careful impression of the vault keys and the key of tho front door of the bank in wax and all aletho the measures necessary I 1 then returned to the cashiers house and replaced the keys in his bla pockets just as I 1 had found them wo we closed up the house and went home the night after we had bad called on cashier doll dell bill and I 1 paid a visit to tho bank about two iwo in id the morning when we know knew the policeman on the beat was taking a snooze in a bakery the keys worked like a charm five after we entered the bank 1 waa the vault packing up the green stuff I 1 took all the money and such bonds bond sas as appeared to be negotiable I 1 worked lively and in twenty minutes closed the doors of the vault and walked out with in my grip we were in time to connect with a 4 freight train after riding about ten miles we wa left the train cro crossed ased the hudson to rhinebeck and took the first train to now york DETECTIVE and wo we are frequently unjustly criticized and condemned 1 I speak in this way because of my recollection of the pounding I 1 received when investigating the robbery of the kingston national bank I drawers in his desk A moment later ho he staggered out and tell fell into a chair ile he was not able to speak for n moment the clerks gathered around him thinking ho he had an attack of heart failure to which he was waa subject ile he announced when ho he got con arol of himself that there was no money in the vault but he did not say aay that thoro thero had bad been a robbery after a short consultation the bank was closed for tho the day and everything was just as it had been bean found when I 1 got there I 1 made a careful examination of all the windows and doors there was no sign that thieves had bad forced an entrance 1 I had a private consultation with the president aud and directors and got from them the history of every nan an who worked in the bank so go far norbey aa they know it every employed had a glit gilt edged reputation was wag prominent in social and church affairs in the town and had bad been with th bank for many years 1 I inquired very minutely into the method of opening the safe af I 1 learned that it required two men menthe abe and a clork v so 0 each had bad a key to without both of them being present ho xe safe bafo could not be opened this I 1
