Show I NEW INVENTION EXHIBITED AT U Last week a very instructive talk was given at the University on a late invention an automatic automatic automatic auto auto- matic train stopping device Mr Minnick who has bas the work rk in charge deserves deserves deserves' considerable credit for the efforts he lie has put forth toward the installation of a system by means of which railroad railroad railroad rail rail- road wrecks and collisions should be be- entirely eliminated The invention has been tested in various parts of the country and received a successful successful successful suc suc- trial in Salt Lake City only a short time ago The device consists of apparatus whereby trains approaching each other on the same track track- are automatically stopped before they can get close enough to collide Two wires running parallel parallel parallel par par- to the tracks are engaged by contact brushes on the locomotives These wires are laid in sections sections sections sec sec- or blocks insulated from each and so arranged that when two locomotives stand on the same same blocks or section a short-circuit short results and by this the apparatus on each locomotive applies applies applies ap ap- plies the air to the brakes and both are consequently consequently consequently conse conse- stopped Furthermore the application of the air is intermittent so the train is slowed l gradually and not by sudden jerk As explained by Mr Minnick the device is unfailing and if installed by the railroads would almost entirely eliminate damage to property and loss of life through collisions |
