That seemed to be the turning point In the gamc and the Trojans of Morgan moved out for a 47-40 point lead at the end of the third period. In the final canto it was Morgan all the way as they hit from the field and from the foul line to extend tine margin to what appeared to be a decisive victory. vic-tory. Coach Hobbs, nevertheless, got good performance from his Redimcn. Leavltt was the sixth leading scorer In the tournament. tourna-ment. Don Payne, although In foul trouble In a coupli; of games, was a stellar performer perform-er throughout the tournament as well as the season. David Judd, Cox and Cornell Christ-en;en Christ-en;en all performed well on the forward wall and Ron Adams came In to hit some timely shots at the forward spot. On the guard line Wat-ton Wat-ton and Jenson proved to be steady and maintained good ball control for the Redmen In the contest. It was Roland Snyder who came off the bench to fill In on the guard llne through the tournament and most of the season. Delta was Ibomlbed by Moalb In the championship game Saturday evening 64-52 to finish one and two , In the tournament respectively. Morgan, Mor-gan, by virtue of their win over the Redmen picked pick-' ' ' ed off third place. Grantsvllle downed Juab 62-50 for fourth place and the consolation hon- ois. The Redmen were In fifth place and Juab was sixth. Richfield and North Sanpete the other two tournament entrants en-trants were knocked out of the competition with two straight losses. Always expect the unexpected unexpect-ed at the State Basketball tournaments. That way you won't be disappointed. The AA State Classic concluded con-cluded Saturday at the George Albert Smith Fleldhouse on the Brigham Young University campus provided the unexpec. ted as the Red Devils of Moab, a vertual unknown going Into beat all of the favorites to wind up with the 1973 title. The Red Devils were very unimpressive In their opening game win over Grantsvllle, but from that point on it was a matter of tha tall and rangy Moab crew playing the role, of Giant killer, in the way of knocking over the favorites. Cedar High School Redmen ware impressive in the opening open-ing round game rolling over North Sanpete with ease. After a fairly close first quarter of play Coacih Dick iHatabs was able to completely clear his bench in the contest as the Redmen breezed to an easy victory. It was the semi final round off play Friday night that provided pro-vided the unexpected. In the first smi-final action state champions Delta and tournament favorite Morgan shaped into a game that had all the elements that It was supposed to have with the Raibblts of Delta etching out a one-point victory In an overtime ov-ertime to win their way into the finals, But for the Rodmcn of Cedar City they did not fair so well. Tha Moalb creww, as Indicated who were very unimpressive in their opening game, came out with their shooting eye fixed on the baskets and they Ibomlbed the Redmen into submission sub-mission early in the game. The Red Devils took an early lead in the costest and al-back al-back gallantly they could never make up the difference established early by the Grand County High School and they fell victim to the unexpected. Moalb was phenomlnal from the field. Without any particular particu-lar semblence of a set pattern the Moalb crew just worked their way across mid-court and threw the ball up. Better than half the time the ball acted like it was radar controlled con-trolled as It split the nets. The Redmen although behind be-hind early, narrowed the gap and were never out of the contest. con-test. As a mater of fact the iRedmen provided the toughest competition for the Red Devils as they went on to literaly run the Raibblts back to Delta with their tails behind them. It would Ibe safe in saying that the Delta-Morgan and Cedar-IMoalb battles in the semi-final action were the class games of the three-day tournament. The Redmen lost to the Red Devils by only five points in a game that saw the Cedar City crew turn In a top team effort regardless of the defeat. On that particular night the Moalb crew was just the better bet-ter team. Saturday night's finale saw the Redmen drop another contest, con-test, this time to Morgan High School to wind up in fifth place in the tournament. Final score in the battle for third and fifth was 75-56, but the gam.9 was not as one sided as the score would Indicate. Rob Jenson, Kevin Cox and Coby Leavltt hit well, particularly partic-ularly from the outside early in the game to put the Red-men Red-men out in front for a brief stay. They held the advantage throughout the first quarter and the Morgan crew did not catch up with the IRedmen until the closing minutes of the first half of play. At one point in the second period the Redmen led 26 to 20 but Morgan Mor-gan hit six straight points to knot the score at 26-all. The score see sawed for the remainder re-mainder of the half with Morgan Mor-gan hitting a bucket in the final seconds to lead 34-33 at the intermisslos. Doug Watson, probably the |
