Show 1-ISirds in do or die battle With Indians Saturday It'll be do or die for the Southern Utah State T-Birds this Saturday when they host KMAC rival Adams State. This will be homecoming and the last home game of the 197-1 season. Kickoff time in T-Bird Stadium is at 1 ::S0. If the T-Birds still want any part of the HMAC crown, they must knock off the Indians this week and Westminster next week, then hope Western State gets bumped at least once. Head coach Tom Kingsford's T-Birds haven't beat Adams State since 1970 and that was here in Cedar City by a score of In fact that was the only time in nine games SUSC has beaten Adams State. The T-Birds are coming into the game w ith a record of 2-5 (2-2 KMAC I while Adams State is 4-3 (3-2 HMAC). The Indians, who knocked off Westminster last Saturday H4-2(J in Alamosa, come into the game with a balanced offensive attack. averaging 188 yards rushing and 172 yards passing per game. On the ground ASC is led by halt hack Joe I.ockhart and tailback Larry McCutchcon. I.ockhart has 1125 yards on H7 carries for an average of 7.1 yards per carry, while McCutchcon Mc-Cutchcon has carried 74 times for 2!U yards and 3.7 average. In the air the Indians have two fine passers in Tectum "T" Anderson and Joe Mummau. Mummau has completed :i;t passes for 4!tl yards and five touchdowns, and Anderson has completed 37 passes for 534 yards and six td's. Sammy Martinez has been their favorite receiver; he has caught 18 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown. On defense, the Indians have given up only 23(i.5 yards per game, way below Sl'SC's offensive of-fensive average of 371.2 yards. Two men who may give SUSC trouble are cornerback Rich Byrom and defensive back Skip Watley. Both have four in tereeptious apiece while ASC has a total of 13 m six games. One fact that should be taken into consideration is both Adams State's KMAC losses have been to teams SUSC has whipped. Fort Lewis beat ASC (i t) while SUSC beat FLC 10 8 and Colorado Mines beat ASC 7-(i and SUSC beat Mines 27-21. In last Saturday's 21 19 defeat to Chico State the T-Birds simply got started too late, scoring 19 points in the last eight minutes of the game. Quarterback Jerry Dyer threw for 2li() yards and two touchdowns -- a 25-yarder to Stan Jones and a 10-yard toss to Willard Uric. Jones set a school record with thirteen receptions in the game, good for 140 yards. Urie grabbed six passes lor 105 yards. SUSC's other score came on a Reese (Irill'iths one yard run. On defense the T Birds grabbed six fumbles and picked off two passes. Tom Martin led the defense with fifteen tackles while Mike Kernodle had 11 tackles. Saturday w ill also be the last time for fans to see the 14 seniors play at home. They are Lyle Anderson QB-DB, Chris Anderson An-derson CB, Martin 1)11 K, Griffiths KB, Dave Nelson KB, S. Jones SF, Lon Saunders S, Tim Gauthier S, Greg Smith LB, Frank LaKussa OT, Arnie Francis OT, Ted I'ritchett LB, Kay Newberry DK, and Drew Hansen TK. Kleven of the seniors w ill be starters either on offense or defense. |
