We are commemorating 50 years of Rotary in Cedar City. In the days and weeks to follow you will be hearing more about Rotary culminating in a special commemorative program on our anniversary date June 10, 1975. ; . y By Elwood J. Corry President Cedar City Club "It was February 23, 1905. In Chicago, Illinois, on this particular par-ticular February day, four men met in Room 711 of the Unity Building of Dearborn Street. They were Paul P. Harris, a lawyer, Silvester Schiele, a coal dealer, Gustavus E. Loehr, a mining engineer, and Hiram E. Shorey, a merchant tailor. They talked about an idea that Paul Harris had been pondering for five years. It was simply this: 'That business relations could - -and should - - foster friendly relations'. They need not, thought Paul Harris, be a barrier to friendship." "What kind of men were these that Paul Harris had brought together? All were friendly and congenial, and each represented a recognized and honorable vocation different from that of the others. They had been selected without regard to religion, racial or political dif ferences. They decided, in agreement with Paul Harris, that the formation of a club might best serve their aims." "Though they didn't decide there and then to call it a Rotary Club, that meeting on the night of February 23, 1905, was the first meeting of the world's first Rotary Club." Twenty years later, Rotary was now international in it's scope, a somewhat similiar group of men, inspired by the ideals of Rotary with the Motto: "Service Above Self", decided to organize a Cedar City Rotary Club. On June 10, 1925 the Cedar City Rotary Club was organized with Dr. J. M. Macfarlane as the first president and A. Y. Hardy as Secretary. Other members comprising that original charter group were: G. Henry Bergstrom, Warren H. Bulloch, L. A. Burascano, William W. Butler, Don Coppin, H. J. Doolittle, John P. Fuller, William H. Gordon, Dr. A. C. PAUL V. HARRIS. Founder of Rotary is being recognized Internationally In-ternationally during notary's 50th Anniversary celebration. |
