In a game that was plagued with errors, generated little offense on either side and which saw the Thunderbirds throw away several scoring opportunities, op-portunities, SUSC still held onto a 6-0 lead over the Ft. Lewis Rangers with just 5:33 remaining on the clock in the final quarter of play. SUSC's scores had come on two fieldgoals by Joe Wells. The first was a 42 yard effort early in the second quarter of play. The second was less than five minutes into the fourth quarter and for all appearances ap-pearances was enough to hold up for a win in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference battle. But it was not to be as the bottom fell out from under the T-Birds in the final minute of play allowing the Raiders to come back and capture a 7-6 victory. What made the 6-0 lead look so good is the fact that throughout the third quarter of play and through the early stages of the fourth period the Raiders had generated only two first downs both with the help of penalties -and had never penetrated beyond their own 36 yard line. But with the Thunderbirds in possession with less than six minutes to play they were forced into a kicking situation from their own 46. The snap from center was bad and Jeff Rowberry, the SUSC punter had to fall on the ball on his own 33 where the Raiders took possession with 5:33 remaining in the game. A run up the middle produced only two yards but on the next play the T-Birds were slapped with a pass interference penalty in the endzone and the ball was placed on the T-Bird four yard line with a first and goal. The first play netted one yard to the three and on the second play the Riaders were thrown for a loss back to the five. That play, however, was nullified on an SUSC off-side penalty and the ball was moved half the distance to the goal to the one and one-half. On two subsequent running run-ning plays the T-Bird defense held, but on fourth and less than a yard to go running back Heramn Heard of the Raiders punched in for , the touchdown to knot the score at 6-all.
