Show CA ) ys. Letters YQfrL ToThe S jlj Editor Editor: '. ..To the people of Cedar City and ! surrounding regions: ' As the final productions of the Utah Shakespearean Festival's 18th season come to an end, I feel it is extremely important that I write this letter of thanks to the people of Southern Utah. We have had a most successful summer, in spite of the gas shortage and all sorts of threats. The Festival staff and company are grateful to Cedar City for the hospitality shown us this year. For the many kindnesses f demonstarted within the community ' toward company members and staff, for the hundreds of relatives and out-of-town guests whom you entertained in your homes, for the inconveniences you put up with due to the large crowds of theatre-goers in the various stores and restaurants , and most of 1 all for the acceptance of this Festival I as a welcomed part of the Cedar City I way of life, thank you. I hope that in the years to come this r Festival can grow and bring an even j larger tourist dollar and national I focus on our community. If we are to j grow, it will be because of the wonderful won-derful support of each and every one of you have given us. On behalf of the combined company for the 1979 season, I wish to thank you. Sincerely, Fred C. Adams Editor: In recent letters concerning Cedar High School and the release of Dr. ' ' Jerald Hawley as principal there is one major point that I would like to""" make. No one thought to ask the students of CHS what they thought about Doctor Hawley, something that I find peculiar since we are the ones that this whole escapade affected. Never at any time was there any mention of the impact that it would have on our educations, ideals and futures. It appears that a clever ploy of the School Board, to remove Dr. Hawley, has been a success. I invite the School Board to inhale the sweet scent of victory. But I would caution them, to remember that the ghosts of their action will rise up to haunt them. Also, I would be interested in knowing if the school board took its action to improve the educational climate of its students. If so, I must regretfully inform them that it has not worked. Speaking for the over 750 students that were at CHS last year, and for those that will be there, I can say with great accuracy that all the Board has succeeded in doing is alienating the students of CHS from their Principal. Another point that should be brought up is, although the school board has "evaluated" the administrators, ad-ministrators, it is not doing the same for the teachers. If it is, it isn't having much effect. Surely the Board cannot expect its teachers to be perfect if its adminstrators are not. And, as we can see, they apparently aren't. In my experience with Dr. Hawley, I have found hm not only good for the job, but indispensable. Further, I note that the Board has never thought to look at the position that Dr. Hawley was in. Did the Board ever stop to think that maybe it was the job. Of course, if the Board decides it is the job, then a change in the prin-cipalship prin-cipalship will just compound the problem. I am saddened to see Dr. Hawley leave. I feel that CHS needed him. I think that I speak for many others. Name withheld on request. Editor: (Editor's Note: The following letter is being published because of its wide interest to residents of the area.) The Taylor family has just returned to Salt Lake from a delightful experience ex-perience in Cedar City and Southern Utah. The three' plays were very well done. It would be difficult to choose a favorite. Costuming, staging, and acting were superb. And the physical setting was beautiful. We enjoyed Romeo and Juliet, the pre-play explanation, ex-planation, the backstage tour, and the Green Shows, also. The accommodations at EIRey were comfortable (the girls loved the pool), and the food was delicious. Two days with such a pleasant guides as Norm gave us a more complete and enjoyable picture of both Bryce and Zion Canyons. I truly appreciate the time and expense which were involved in this contest. And I am especially glad that I won. My family and I will long enjoy many fond memories because of your hospitality and generosity. We sincerely sin-cerely thank you, We will be among those who sing the loudest and longest with praises of KLUB, Cedar City and the Shakespearean Festival, Color County Tours, the EIRey Motel and Restaurant, and all others from your festival. Sincerely Donna P. Taylor Editor: My friend and I were in Cedar City for the Utah Shakespearean Festival. I was there last year and it was difficult dif-ficult to find out about your beautiful small city. This year we signed up for your tour, (offered through the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce). A driver and guide took us around and it was very interesting. I hope you continue and that more people become aware of the opportunity they are missing, the driver refused gratuities and was wonderful. Thank you again. Looking forward to next year and will take the tour again and recommend it to others in this vicinity.. Laura Dilts Sincerely, Charlott Jensen (Salt Lake City) |
