Show Family Life Students display Originality : 1 f I M I I t ' i ' i t j ft A ' mm1 '"" ; 1 I ' f ' , The Family Living Center at Southern Utah State College was a bustling tenter for cake baking, story telling, clothing and home arts competition here Tuesday. Purple sweepstakes ribbons were awarded 11 of the 175 junior and senior high school students who participated in home economics and family life competition as part of traditional SUSC Vocational Day activities. Students from Piute, Panguitch, Cedar, Milford, Hurricane, Escalante, Heaver, Valley, Millard, and Cedar Jr. High participated in events sponsored by the SUSC Department of Family Life. Several hundred other students were also on campus to compete in areas of business and agriculture. COOKING HONORS. Cedar High School students Belinda Neilson and Lori Jones with the sweepstakes angel food cake. They were participants in cake baking competition recently at SUSC. "Entries in family life and home economics this year showed more originality and creative ability than ever before," Ada Carpenter, chairwoman of the Department of Family Life, said. "We were very pleased to welcome the students to SUSC and were delighted to see such enthusiasm generated by both male and female participants," she added. In addition to the areas of student competition, demonstrations dealing with "Cottage Industries" were conducted by Cedar City caterer Annette Nelson and by Salt Lake City home economist-craftswoman Mary Kay Powers. Sweepstakes ribbons were awarded two teams in cake baking competition. Belinda Neilson and Lori Jones, Cedar High, along with Shannah Drew and Ver Jean Esplin, Valley High, received top awards for delectable angel food cakes which were baked in the SUSC kitchens. Puppet Show Award A team of Piute High School coeds received sweepstakes awards for their puppet show. LeeAnn Cannon and Sherree Luke created their own story, puppets and stage props for their award-winning presentation. Three sweepstakes winners win-ners were named in clothing construction competition. Rose Stevens, Millard High, was named a winner for superior work done on a jumpsuit; Janette Nelson, Cedar High, for a blazer jacket; and Colleen Truman, Beaver High, for a velvet blazer. In the home arts division, Lorrie Larson, Millard High, received a superior rating for decorative heavy macrame. Kerrie Tebbs, Panguitch High, received another sweepstakes ribbon for an original quilt. ' ' M - I I : fy 1 -"11' SPECIAL AWARD.
