Show Ir THREE-HOUR THREE EXAMS J At the close of last year the faculty after m much discussion decided upon a plan pl-n whereby the monthly and quarterly examinations examinations examinations exam exam- were to be eliminated and three- three hour examinations at the end of each half year were to be substituted The strong argument argument ar ar- advanced ed against the old pf plan n and the one which caused it to be discarded was that under the th scheme of 0 was giving examinations examinations examinations exam exam- at odd intervals with advance notice notice no no- tice tic students would neglect all others subjects subjects sub sub- j temporarily to prepare up bone to iise use the students' students expression for the impending impending impending im im- pending test Obviously Obviously- then a rule that would eliminate el nate this difficulty would be for forthe forthe forthe the good of f all concern concerned d. d With this view view- in mind the three-hour three exams were adopted adopt adopt- ed for this year In some courses no exams have been given thus far in others however t tests have been held with probably as much regularity regularity regularity regu regu- larity as heretofore It may be necessary J for certain professors to give examinations at suitable intervals because of the th nature of their work If so these e examinations should be given without previous warning else the purpose of the new v plan is frus frus- It matters not whether these tests be designated written reviews written recitations or examinations of the simon pure pure variety so long as the student knows that his paper is tp to be graded and th that t grade if too low will cause him to be re reported reported reported re- re ported in the subject he will do his best to tobe tobe tobe be prepared for the exam This is not mere conjecture but is substantiated by facts Many students and especially those in the Engineering courses have been doing just jus the sort of thing that has been prevalent for years years sloughing sloughing all work to the advantage advantage advantage advant advant- age of the subject in which there was an impending impending impending im im- pending examination Clearly then the new pl plan n is failing to secure the desired end but primarily because it is not being adhered to If it is to be a success it must be adopted adopt d uniformly and be given a good opportunity f |
