Show PRESIDENT KINGSBURY VISITS UTAH'S DIXIE Governors Governor's Party on Tour of Southern Utah as Told by the President The people of St. St Geo George ge and of the the adjacent ad ad- adjacent jac jacent nt country country in in Sout Southern ern Utah deserve all the good things to which an industrious patient and suffering long-suffering people are justly justly justly just just- ly entitled Only their great industry their determined will power and faithful adherence adherence adherence ence to principle would have held a people in that part of the state with the obstacles they have had to encounter But through indomitable will power they they have have surmounted surmounted surmounted ted many of the obstacles Governor William William Will Will- iam Spry and party rode into that country in the night and arrived at St. St George Georg at 1 30 o'clock in the morning meeting at that early l hour r a most cordial welcome into the city During During that day and the following day meetings receptions and social enter entertainments enter occupied the party the greater I part of the time The Governor and others made interesting addresses encouraging the r people and emphasizing the importance of ofa i ia a college education and opening up this wonderful country and its great resources and possibilities to the world outside by the construction of a railroad A number of the important towns of the Dixie country were visited on the way vay home Washington W American La Verkin and Toquerville All these extended a welcome hand to the party All along the homeward route school children children chil chil- dren came out carrying the Stars and Stripes flying g in the air and singing patriotic patriotic patriotic patri patri- otic songs It made one fully realize that although in an isolated and almost detached corner of our great country that 9 he was still within the free atmosphere of loving liberty-loving citizens of the government to which every true American is proud to acknowledge his allegiance The people of Dixie were were all pleased to meet the first governor governor governor gov gov- of the state to venture down into this off-corner off of the earth The weather was ideal during the stay in the Dixie land Beautiful flowers of all descriptions were plentiful Grapes apples pomegranates and almond nuts are abundant ant ant and del delicious cious food of al all kinds were furnished t to satisfy the appetites so thoroughly thor thorn sharpened by rid riding ng in a pure clear atmosphere To make the governor and his party f fully lly prepared to appreciate the good I I things the people were so generous to bestow bestow be be- be- be stow upon them they were at first taken through Diamond v valley then hen into th the Devils Devil's play ground and finally driven through the valley of Purgatory During During During Dur Dur- ing these interesting and s strenuous trips every bone in every member of the party was thoroughly sh shaken ken up and no nop p part rt of ones one's body escaped a most thorough jolting The of Satan were in evidence The Dixie count country y is a rough volcanic region A large portion of its surface is covered with lava and extinct volcanic cra cra- In the upper part of the Virgin river the canyon is narrow and walled in by perpendicular perpendicular perpendicular per per- cliffs from two to four thousand feet high The country is broken and torn up in every conceivable manner The governor governor governor gov gov- and his party left the good people of the southern oasis with a feeling that they had never before had such an enjoyable and interesting trip The roads in getting out of that country were about as fierce as they were in getting in into to the southern oasis Cedar City with the Branch Normal school chool was the last place visited Here a royal welcome was given the he party The governor found the people wide awake inthe inthe in the interest of the Branch Normal which has done so much for southern Utah The trip rip was one long to be remembered full of interest interest- politically interest politically and educationally on account of pf the hospitality of the people and I the unique character of the country J.
