Show Garn investigates fraud abuse in Welfare Dept. U. S. Senator Jake Garn has announced his support of a move to establish a senate committee to investigate welfare fraud and abuse. Citing the need to halt escalating welfare abuses and their subsequent expense to the taxpayer, Garn said he has joined Sen. James Buckley of New York in sponsoring Senate Resolution 438 which authorizes the establishment of a Select Committee of the Senate to conduct welfare investigations. "It is common knowledge," Garn said, "that there are welfare abuses which need correcting and most feel the corrections should originate in the Congress. Although those who abuse welfare constitute a minority of all who receive some form of public assistance, still that minority likely costs American taxpayers billions of dollars every year. Senator Garn said the Select Committee on welfare fraud would focus needed attention on welfare abuse and would provide the Senate with information necessary to effectively reform federal welfare programs. |
