Show I Softball Tourney won by Arctic Circle I 1 -A i yMFZfJ i y l jl , Arctic Circle captured the Cedar City Invitational Softball tournament started here this past week with a come-from-behind victory in the double elimination tournament. Behind the steady pitching pf Terry Price, Arctic Circle lost to Cambridge Reality of St. George in the semi-final action of play and had to come back and win three games -- including two over Cambridge - to capture the title in the final night of action. Arctic Circle started the tournament with a 10-3 win over Enterprise and in the second round defeated Tri-State Tri-State by a score of 5-2. In the semi-finals Cambridge Cam-bridge behind the pitching of Jim Speery handed Arctic their first and only loss of the game a 2-1 victory to put Cambridge in the driver's seat in the tournament action. In the final night of play Arctic Circle was matched against Coleman in the first game and posted a 11-7 victory. That pitted them against Cambridge for the championship. In the first game of the championship Arctic Circle scored a 2-1 victory in nine innings and came back in the final game of the tournament to defeat the St. George crew by a score of 1-0. In the final night of action he hurled a total of 23 innings in posting three victories. At the conclusion of the tournament an all-star team was selected composed of 10 players. Named were: Arctic Circle: Kevin Cox, Bernie Leavilt, Terry Price. Cambridge Reality: Jim Sperry, Torn Torres. Coleman: Bryce Peterson, Howard Peterson and Kerry Rupp. Pizza Factory: Mike Rice and Bill Kringlin. Members of the championship cham-pionship team included Price on the mound and Kevin Cox catching. At first was Bernie Leavitt; second, Robert Evans; third, Roger Chambers; shortstop, Steve Hodson; left field, Chris Kupfer, center, Steve Judd and right, Wayne Mifflin. Playing in a utility role was Virge Smith. The team was managed by Cliff Reese. In regular league action there is still a battle for the 1977 title, according to Wayne Mifflin, Recreation Director. Currently Pizza Factory holds a slight edge with a 17-2 lead followed by Tri-State with a 16-3. A series of makeup games could throw the battle into a tie. "We hope to resolve the league championship this week," Mifflin stated. |
