And next time is the hope of Brad Jackson as he comes home to trade in his thinclads for pads as he prepares to participate wih the Cedar High School football team this fall. Brad Jackson of Cedar City won his way into the finals of both the 100 and the 440 yard dashes of the National AAU- Junior Olympics held Saturday and Sunday at Lincoln, Neb. Jackson, who was the top sprinter in the Utah prep ranks this past year, captured cap-tured state honors in both events, entered the Region 10 AAU meet at El Paso, Tex. where he won the 440 and finished second in the 100 making him eligible for the national finals this past week . Brad finished seventh in both final events with the 100 yard finals on Saturday and the 440 yard finals held Sunday as the opening event in the nationally televised program. For Jackson it was an "experience never to be forgotten," he indicated on his return Monday afternoon and when asked if he would like to return next year-he has another year of eligibility in the Junior Olympics-his response was an emphatic "you bet." Much of the activity at the Junior Olympics was geared to the television exposure, Brad indicated. In Saturday's opening competition Jackson participated par-ticipated in three 100 yard dash events and two 440 yard dashes within the period of one hour with the finals of the 100 yard dash the finale of the day. "When I found myself in the finals of the 100 I just couldn't believe it," Brad said. "No way did I figure that I would be able to reach the finals in that event," he said. But he did and he did it in a series of two qualifying heats Saturday afternoon, interspersed with two qualifying 440 yard dashes. "I got off to a bad start in the 100. My second step with the right foot just seemed to miss somehow and I was never able to regain my stride," Brad said. In the 440 yard dash Brad had the second best qualifying time and was ranked as one of the co-favorites co-favorites in the event with Ramsey of Oregon. "I was running in the first lane and I could see the others out in front on stagger," Brad said. "I believe that my mistake was that I tried to base my run against Ramsey rather than run my race." Brad apparently ap-parently made up the stagger on Ramsey on the first turn and was running well in the back stretch. Ramsey came off the final |
