Show 'Parenting' PHS Students learn how r n r j -v., . ; SPECIAL CLASS. Stan Baker and Bill Moss get some interesting in-teresting instructions in Senior Seminar on Responsible Parenting recently conducted at Parowan High School. PAROWAN - Parowan High School is just finishing up a Senior Seminar in Responsible Parenting, directed by Leilani Bentley of the PHS Humanities Department. The course is designed to give senior students an insight into the responsibilities and joys of parenthood. It is also planned to g give young people some improtant skills to take into their marriages and their roles as parents. The seniors have spent a good deal of time and effort to learn many of the skills and attitudes necessary to become responsible parents in today's world. The course focused on fix e major areas of instruc t i: 1. The role of the famih ,n society. 2. Choosing a marriage partner. 3. Preparation for parenthood. 4. Child development from birth to three years of age. 5. Household moneyh management and consumer skills. Over the semester, the students have had many resource people who shared their expertise with the seminar group. Among them were Mr. Vernile Matheson, Mrs. Robert Tobler, Mrs. Alta Dalton of the High School faculty. Mrs. LaFawn Robinson, Iron County School Nurse taught t the mother and baby care s section; Mr. Albert Orton instructed a CPR course, with all studnets qualifying in CPR work; Mrs. Marianno Tobler shared expertise in child development. Mrs. Robinson also invited others to share her time-Mrs. Edna Hatch, Aleen Prother, and Pam Barton who helped in the workshop in child care and emergency first aid and medical knowledge for the home. Mrs. Jody Lynn Heaps, a student teacher at the school, organized a project in which each student spun a "Wheel of Life" in which he received a simulated life situation which he had to research and present at a culminating activity in the class. One of the most enjoyable sections of the semester was the baby care part in which all of the students participated par-ticipated in the bathing and dressing of a small "baby" provided by Mrs. Robinson. Lots o of nimble fingers became thumbs, and lots of perspiring brows developed as young men and women, unfamiliar with bathing procedures for newborns attempted to bathe and dress the "infants". The course meets the requirements of the State Department of Education for Responsible Parenthood. i |
