Show AN ERROR In the Sept 30 issue of the Chronicle Chronicle Chronicle Chron Chron- icle appeared an editorial on the system system tem tern of student government now effective effective effective tive at the University In substance w said that hereafter it will devolve upon the student i body ody to make its own rules of discipline enforce them and judge any infringements upon them Manifestly we did not have the actual actual actual ac ac- ac- ac facts of the system in hand when we wrote the editorial It appears that the only part of the quoted above-quoted statement which is true is the third namely that the power of judging infringements infringements infringements in in- upon the rules of discipline discipline discipline pline of the University is now vested in the students We Ve regret that it itis itis itis is necessary to make this correction because student government of the kind which apparently exists at present present present pres pres- ent is not student government at all It is merely the delegation of police power to the junior and senior classes In other words the faculty still makes all rules of discipline and end another body distinct and separate from the faculty and with no voice in faculty proceedings must judge the infringements infringements infringements infringe infringe- ments on these rules rue fallacy in such a system is ap ap- ap- ap parent Students will be called to judge their fellow students in accordance accordance accord accord- ance ante with a code not devised by hy students students students stu stu- dents themselves Whether they accept accept ac ac- accept the code or not their decisions must be he in accordance with it We ask wherein lies the justice of oi such a system In our courts a federal federal fed fed- eral case is not tried in a state court nor a state case in a municipal court But in our University student court faculty cases will be tried in a student student stu dent ent court The federal government delegates certain powers to the state and all cases coming within the province province province pro pro- vince of these delegated powers are I tried in state courts What powers lave have the faculty delegated to the student student student stu stu- dent body Only the power of trying faculty cases cases st subject to the approval of the faculty Obviously sly the whole wholes s system neutralizes itself We Ve can s see e no no gooi good koodin in the continuance continuo d' d i nn ante ance e of or such a system Unless theris there ther is a legislature branch as well as a judicial and executive branch to a system of student government its influence influence influence in in- fluence is zero If no power except except that of police is delegated to the students students stu dents then we had better dispense with the whole system in order to do doa a away way with an irremediable ency We Ve had looked for big things from fresh the establishment of new student government government gov gov- eminent plan and without knowing its real constitution we praised it editorially editorially editor last week We Ve now see that its I defects are too great to hope for much good from it We shall work this year for a student student student stu stu- dent government system with ith three distinct branches We Ve bespeak the support of both faculty and students students students stu stu- dents in the establishment of such a system |
