H Beckstrand professor of mechanical mechanical mechanical me me- engineering in the University University University sity is the author of Bulletin No 7 the latest publication of the Utah Engineering Engineering Engineering En En- Experiment station The bulletin deals with the results of Professor Beckstrand's experiments on sewer pipe and drain tile Professor Beckstrand has carried on an extensive series of investigations investigations investigations into the strength of materials used in the construction of such hidden hidden hid hid- den structures as sewer conduits and under-surface under drainage conduits for reclaiming land He has made a careful careful care care- ful study of the clays and concrete used in the construction of pipe as these materials differ in various parts of the country Unlike iron and steel clay and concrete pipe are not usually shipped great distances and consequently it devolves on each locality to make a I study of its own products This and i ito to supply experimental information i ion on the strength and quality of I pipe used in Utah have been the main purpose of Professor Beck- Beck strand The study tudy was begun in 1912 and required until June of this year for forI I completion I The bulletin contains twelve tables and twenty-one twenty illustrations The Utah Engineering Experiment station was established by an act of the the state legislature in March 1909 as a department of the State School of Mines at the University The fhe station station station sta sta- sta- sta tion is authorized to carry carryon on experiments experiments ments and investigations pertaining to any and all questions and problems problems problems lems that admit of laboratory methods of study and a solution of which would tend to benefit the industrial interests of the state I |
