Show CSU Basketball Squad Tackles Westminster, Nev. Southern Next "Two of th.' toughest we'll play," is the way Col logo of Southern Utah basketball coach Boyd Adams describes games Friday and Monday against Westminster and Nevada Ne-vada Southern. "I've said it before, but it's still true," Adams said, "if we expect to stay in the thick of the race for the conference championship, we've got to win at home." Winning at home Friday against Westminster West-minster is not expected to be easy. As for Monday's garni; at Las Vegas against high-flying Nevada Southern, CSU will be facing a buzsaw. "Our biggest big-gest concern rigid now is preparing pre-paring for our conference game with Westminster. We will have no time for social preparation for Nevada Southern," South-ern," Adams groaned. On the surface CSU and Westminster appear about equal. The Parsons have a bit the better record, 6-2, compared com-pared to CSU's 5-3. Both are 1-1 in conference play witli losses to Adams State on the road and homo victories over Western Now Mexico. Size will be about the same, and both teams have a pair of potent performers. Die Thunderbirds have Dave Pinamonti and Skip Mead. Westminster has Ken Hall and Joe Winrow. Around the Rocky Mountain Conference, Westminster is figured to be a little tougher this season than the T-Birds. But with the homocourt being CSU's, the game looks like it will be close. The big Thunderbird concern con-cern is the health of Pinamonti, Pina-monti, the club's top scorer (21-6 per game) and second best rebounder (11.4 per game). The 6-1 forward missed miss-ed Friday's game when CSU blasted Western New Mexico, because of the flu. "Even if Dave is back and able to play, we don't know how strong he will be nor how long he will be able to keep the pace," Adams said. Otherwise, the team looks healthy. Brent Turek and Gil Mullen took up much of the scoring and rebounding slack last week with Pinamonti gone. Generally, the T-Bird coaches were pieased with the showing of the backup men for Pinamonti. Nevada Southern is one of the country's top college division di-vision teams. Although not blessed with exceptional height, the Rebels have blinding blind-ing speed and amazing shooting shoot-ing ability. "Also, any time you play on their court, you have to be doubly sharp. They , have some mighty strong and loyal fans down there," Adams commented. "If we play defense the way we can and if we rebound, re-bound, we'll make a mighty good ball game out of it." The Rebels have exceptional exception-al balance. All five starters are averaging in double figures- Tom Watkins and Bruce Chapman, a pair of transfers, lead the Nevada Southern scoring. Watkins is averaging 24 points, Chapman just over 20. |
