Show Redmen down i!cib314 enter Class 1 playoffs A strong defense and the fine running of Allan Averett catapulted the Cedar High School Redmen into the State Class A quarterfinals Tuesday Tues-day afternoon as they defeated defeat-ed the Moab Red Devils 30 to 14. The victory moves the Red-men Red-men against the tough Millard Mil-lard Eagles Saturday at Fillmore Fill-more in the quarterfinal rounds at 1:00 p. m. Moab came into the contest with a record of five wins and no losses in winning Region 6 championship, but the Cedar Ce-dar Redmen took advantage of breaks in the fourth period as the Redmen picked up 16 points on two touchdowns, a j safety and a two point conver-, sion. The fourth quarter spurt ' was really set up by a Redman Red-man quick kick, a seldom used tactic in this day and age, then capatilized on a Moab fumble. Tom Cardon quick kicked from his own 35 putting the Red Devils deep in their own territory at the 19. On the first play from scrimmage Gritts fumbled and defensive end Steve Knuz pounced on the ball on the Moab 21. Four plays later Averett Av-erett scored from 14 yards out to give the Redmen a 20 to 14 lead. The attempted pass for a two point conversion conver-sion was missed. Moab mid-1 way in the period attempted to get back on the scoreboard with a pass but Cardon picked it off on his 25 and ran it j back to the 37. Forced to punt the Red Devils attempted to field the ball on the three and ran back into the end zone where Brent Blackner tackled the runner for a two point safety. After a free kick which was returned by Aver-rett Aver-rett to the Moab 41 the Red-: men generated a drive that ended in a touchdown with j Tullis packing from six yards ; game all the way, however, as the Red Devils dominated the early play and looked like they might "in away with a victory. Taking the opening kickoff the Red Devils marched 64 yards on 13 plays to score the first touchdown. Gritts scored from the one and Cowan passed to Dickerson for a two point conversion and a quick 8-0 lead over the Redmen. Midway in the second period per-iod when the Redmen failed on a first down attempt on fourth down and the Red Devils Dev-ils took over on their own 31. From that ooint they marched 69 yards foi another score and a 14 to 0 lead. The score came on a pass play from Cowan to Robinson which covered 21 yards. It was then that Averett got things rolling offensively for the Redmen. Lewis Chamberlain Cham-berlain returned the kickoff to the Redman 45. Four plays later the Redmen were on the scoreboard for the first time but missed the PAT attempt to trail 14-6. Averett packed three of the four times and collected 54 of the 55 yard drive. He scored on a three yard plunge over the middle. out. cardon ran over lor me two point conversion and the final victory of 30 to 14. It was not the Redmen Late in the period the Cedar High defense held the Red Devils on the Cedar 30. A big play moved the ball to the Red Devils 17 and five plays later Averett again scored from one yard out and Cardon plunged over for the extra points to tie the score at 14 all. Time ran out on the touchdown play and they were not even able to kickoff following fol-lowing the score. |
