B What no doubt will be considered by byI I the students as the biggest send god-send in int t half a century was the action of the faculty faculty fac t last week Henceforth in the college college college col col- lege of arts and sciences the only prescribed prescribed prescribed pre pre- scribed subject will be freshman English or Rhetoric This cuts out from the theE ther r i E pres prescribed list all of freshman mathematics mathe- mathe f f matics including solid geometry trigonometry trigo- trigo t f and advanced algebra advanced t f physics and sophomore English and andI I makes these studies elective This is in accordance with a general movement in education throughout the United States in which a number of the leading Universities Universities s 's ies have already taken a similar course lof of of action Freshman mathematics college physics and sophomore English have been the rocks on which many a student life has been wrecked or sadly damaged They have ve been pursued by hy most students as a necessary evil evil t to be j jogged through merely for the sake of credit on the regis regis- registrars registrar's registrars registrar's books Student after student has has- wasted enough nervous energy on these studies to have mastered half a dozen other sciences on account of the repulsing and I disheartening mood in which lessons in 1 these subjects have been prepared They have been the curses of college life This has been especially true of freshman mathematics largely true of physics and measurably true of rhetoric Hereafter w when hen a student is registered in the college he will be expected to choose a major study and the professor of this subject will be assigned to him as ad ad- visor The student stude t will have to consult with his advisor in out or in altering altering altering alter alter- ing his course If the student is so undecided undecided undecided unde unde- as to be unable to select a major study then the college committee will select select select se se- lect an advisor for him If a student how however eyer prefers to select his own advisor from among the faculty he will be given this privilege It was further decided that hereafter the school of arts aits and science will confer only one degree that of Bachelor of Arts abandoning the the the-B. B. B S. S degree This also is in accordance with a general movement among the universities of the United States |
