Show Penalties for Driving Violations Made More Uniform Juvenile Judges from throughout through-out the state of Utah, including Sixth District Judge Durham Morris of Cedar City, met in Salt lake City recently. On the agenda for discussion was the subject of penalties for Juvenile traffic offenses. A series of minimum fines and penalties were discussed and although al-though not totally agreed upon, according to Mr. Morris, were established es-tablished for the purpose of bringing about more uniformity of punishment for certain offenses of-fenses throughout the state. It was emphasized, however, that penalties decided on were urc! :ul,,T??t'Bd minimum and that each'case would be adjudged adjudg-ed as the case may warrant. Mr. Morris further emphasized that the minimum schedules were not necessarily brought about because of any major increase in-crease in offenses, but simply for uniformity. Some examples of the suggested suggest-ed minimums were set as follows: fol-lows: Speeding: minimum penalty of $1 each mile over the speed limit lim-it on the first offense. On the second offense the minimum schedule calls for the same fine plus $5. If the driver was going more than 15 miles over the speed limit, his driving license would be restrained for 30 days. Reckless driving: , $25 on the first offense. Second offense called call-ed for revocation of license. Juvenile drivers engaged In speed contests: $10 first offense, $15 fine and 30 days suspension on second offense and suspension for 90 days on the third offense. Careless driving: minimum of $10 fine for the first offense, restrict driving 30 days on second sec-ond offense and suspend license for 90 days on third offense. Driving without a license: $10 for first offense and a deferment of three months before driver an get a driving permit; $10 fine for second offense and on the offense would be placed on probation. Improper passing: first offense $10; second offense $15 and three months suspension of license for third offense. Failure to obey a sign or signal: sig-nal: $10 fine for first and second offense and suspension of license for 90 days on third offense. |
