Show Fire Prevention and You While the prevention of fire must be a year-around task, it is well that one week each year is particularly designated as Fire Prevention Week. It focuses public at-' at-' tenuon on the need for fire safety effort. It. gives a special opportunity to editorial writers, publicists, commentators, safety organizations and fire departments to drive home the message that life and property can be saved through intelligent fire prevention effort. Fire Prevention Week begins this Sunday, October 7, and continues through October 13. It will be as usual widely observed nationally and in Utah. One of the most important observances in Utah will be direct fire prevention action by members of paid and volunteer fire departments. Many of these departments will take the fire safety message to homes and business establishments through personal visits. This personal visitation vis-itation program is not confined in all cases to Fire Prevention Pre-vention Week. Some departments, carry out the program over a period of several weeks at this time of year, when m nrcvftnHnn la ImMrfanM hamiiiea the "vrCChT ing winter season with its increased hazards. Some departments de-partments carry out the program all year long. Use of radio communication between the fire alarm office and fire trucks has simplified the home and business busi-ness inspection program. The fully-manned truck can be taken out into the neighborhood, or business with all members of the crew except the driver making home visits, vis-its, and fire inspections where occupants desire. With the truck in constant radio communication with headquarters head-quarters it is never out of service while this fire prevention work is being carried on. If there is an alarm the driver sounds the truck siren, the crew quickly responds and the truck is on its way. But the truck will be on its way to a fire less often because of the inspection program. In city, after city where this program has been carried on fires and losses have been sharply reduced. I Fire Prevention Week is a good time for encouraging home and business fire safety inspection. Paid and volunteer vol-unteer fire departments can and should -take the lead in this work, but citizens must do their part by welcoming fire safety counsel and maintaining fire safe premises throughout the year. |
