Show Carbon Eagles Thwart Broncos With 13 -7 Victory The College of Southern Utah Broncos played about two min. utes too long against the Carbon Eagles of Price on the local gridiron grid-iron Saturday afternoon as they tost a 13 to 7 battle in their last home appearance of the season. Carbon's final touchdown, the longest drive of the game, came with only one minute and 15 seconds remaining on the clock. Prior to that time the Broncos were holding onto a slim lead of 7 to 6. I The final drive for the Eagles which netted th?m the victory, covered 64 yards with no major gains In the entire drive. It took! the Eagles a total of 17 plays to go for the touchdown, with Jeddy Morely, Eagle's quarter-backing quarter-backing doing the scoring. The first quarter of play was a see-saw battle with neither team threatening during the 15 minutes of play. Both teams were held to three first downs each and one Carbon drive was stopped when Art Jeanselme fumbled and Heyward Marshall. C S U end. recovered on the Bronco 40. That was the deepest penetration for the Eagles while the Broncos on one occasion pen-etrated pen-etrated to the Eagles' 37 yard line. The second quarter of play was . the Broncos' most all the way and It was In this period that Coach Bruce Osborne's team got Its only TO. As the quarter open-1 en the Broncos had possession on their own 47 yard line. On the second play from scrimmage Bob Vest hit Rick Webber with a pass on the Carbon 45 and he carried the ball to the Carbon 16 with the help of fine block by end Dwayne Colledge. Kent Averett then carried the ball to the six yard line and two plays later he hit pay dirt from three yards out to put the Broncos ahead 6 to 0 and Webber added the extra point with a place kick. Late in the quarter the Broncos Bron-cos again threatened when Vest hit Marshall for a 30-yard gain from mid-field to the 20 yard line. However, In four successive attempts with passes Vest failed to connect and Carbon took over until the half. Jeanselme returned the third quarter kickoff from his own 10 to the 39 and Carbon moved from that point to pay dirt without being stopped. The big gain was an end sweek with quarterback I Morely doing the carrying. The play carried 38 yards to the Bronco 20 where Marshall and Dee Smith finally brought him down. Six plays later Carbon scored but failed to convert on a line plunge and the Broncos held a 7 to 6 lead. The C S U Broncos threatened twice more during the course of the game only to lose the ball on two different occasions on fumbles. Late In the third period Vest again passed to Marshall for 40 yards to the 22 and Vest on a keep play had moved to a first down on the 12. On the next play on a pltchout to Webber Web-ber at halfback the ball got loose and In attempting to pick It up Webber kicked the ball and Carbon fell on It back at the 40-yard line. In addition to losing the ball the Carbon Eagles Ea-gles gained 28 yards on the play. Midway In the fourth period another Bronco urive was sio-I sio-I ped by a fumble deep In Carbon territory and It was at tha point that Carbor took over and went 64 yards for the final TD that gave the visitors the 13 to 7 win. |
