Show Former Resident Wins Special Science Scholarship Doyle Rowley, native of Parowan Paro-wan and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clair Rowley, has been awarded a special scholarship on which he will attend the University of Utah's acdemlc year Institute In September. Mr. Rowley will be one of 50 teachers and one of 14 Utahns selected from among 350 applicants appli-cants who will attend the Institute. In-stitute. The program Is aimed at Increasing the Interest of young persons in the study of science by Improving the quality of science sci-ence teaching In the schools of the nation. The teachers who receive the grants will attend the university universi-ty from September, 1957 to June 1958 at which time they will receive re-ceive the university's newest degree, de-gree, master of science education. educa-tion. The grants, which are financed fi-nanced by the National Science Foundation, will pay the teacher's teach-er's salary, dependency and trav-el trav-el allowances in addition to tuition tui-tion and books. This comes to slightly over $4,000 in Rowley's case, we understand. Upon finishing fin-ishing the year of special study the teachers will return to their high school classrooms to teach. Mr. Rowley graduated from Parowan High School, College of Southern Utah and the Brigham Young University. He has taught science and mathematics In the high school at Monticello, Utah for the past several years. He Is married and has one child. |
