Show I Water Use Survey Urged for County Farmers Now is the time for farmers to consider ways to make better use of their Irrigation water for next year, says Iron County Agent Wallace Sjoblom. Dr. Paul Chrlstensen, Utah State University soil conservationist, conserva-tionist, says many farmers can make better use of the water available for next year by changing chang-ing their irrigation system. These changes could Include re-allgn. lng ditches, lining ditches, building build-ing concrete headgates, and land leveling. Each farmer eager to make Irrigation Ir-rigation Improvements should consider these questions: Is each field Irrigated evenly? Ahe there salty spots which could be leached leach-ed in late fall or early spring to make the land more productive- Is there water running off the far end of the farm? Is the available water being used wise. iy? In areas which need improvement improve-ment a farmer may have water that is available In late fall or early spring which can be used to irrigate and fill the soil. Water applied In this way is available for crop use next year. If an excess of water is available, avail-able, lt can be used to good advantage ad-vantage to leach alkali areas. Where ditches have grown up to weeds, a weed control program should be planned for next spring. Farners planning any changes should contact their local ASC committee for details on cost sharing. The federal government will share the cost for approved types of ditch structures and lining, land leveling, and other improvements which will con-serve con-serve soil and water. |
