Show Cedar Rotarians Hear Discussion On Project Smart Members of the Cedar City Ro-tary Ro-tary Club enjoyed a most interesting inter-esting report at the club meeting Tuesday on progress and objectives object-ives of the military air research project at Hurricane Mesa, known s Project Smart. Claud Brosier-nous, Brosier-nous, test base administrator for Coleman Engineering Co., Air Force, contractors at the project, pro-ject, addressed the Rotarians. One of the most serious problems prob-lems facing the Air Force, Mr. Brosterhous pointed out, is to get pilots out of planes traveling at record speeds when an emergency emer-gency arises, and emphasized that the experiments at Project Smart are conducted as a means of solving such problems. Project Pro-ject Smart is playing a most important im-portant part in these studies, he reported. Pilot seat ejection systems are being tested at the project with the seats shot from a rocket sled capable of reaching speeds of well over 1000 miles. With planes now in operation capable of speeds of more than 900 mlies an hour it is important that ejection problems be solved as a means of protection to pilots. Mr. Brosterhous stated that It is now possible to get pilots safely out of planes traveling beyond the speed of sound, but the speed of planes is being constantly increased in-creased and It is necessary to continue experiments in order to keep pace with this progress in speed. The ejection experiments are conducted by ejecting the seats from rocket sleds shot down a 1200 foot steel track to the edge of the mesa. |
