Show Veteran of Korea Fighting Returns to Cedar ! J- ' t St- ) ' I : ' . I '' ' ' '1 Sgt. Walter P. Merryweather, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Merryweather Mer-ryweather and husband of Mrs. jJuanita Naegle Merryweather, returned home Sunday after nearly a year of service in Ko- ; rea. He was discharged from military service at San Francisco Francis-co on Thursday, July 19, before returning home. Sgt. Merryweather, who had served with the Second Division during two years of previous military service, left for overseas duty on Aug. 5, 1950 and was I taken directly to Korea, where jhe was thrown into front line combat, and until the past few months participated in much of (Continued on Back Page) MERRYWEATHER (Continued from Front Page) the bitterest action of the fight against the Reds. He was in the two major battles bat-tles in and around Wonju, where the famed Second Division fought against tremendous odds and gained undying fame. Following Fol-lowing these battles he continued contin-ued with the division on to the drive to the North Korean capital capi-tal of Pyongyang, and was far north of there in the the march to the Yalu river, when the Chinese Chi-nese entered the war. In this withdrawal the division suffered tremendous casualties, and lost practically all of its equipment and supplies. Following the Red reversals of this spring the division band was re-organized and Sgt. Merry-weather Merry-weather was re-assigned to it, where he served vintil he was sent home on rotation. When he received his orders to return home he was with the division in the Inje sector. Walter enlisted for a two-year tour of duty with the Army on August 16, 1948, and would have been released from duty in Aug-use Aug-use of 1950, but for the freeze order issued afler the Korean "police action" began, which held him in service lor another year. He reached San Francisco on July 10, and was joined by his wife. They remained in California Cali-fornia until Sgt. Merryweather was given his discharge last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Merry-weather Merry-weather were married in Washington Wash-ington just a few days before he sailed for overseas. |
