Show County, City Chairmen Make Plans For Polio Fund Drive Although March of Dimes dollars dol-lars retained by the Iron County Chapter of the National Foundation Founda-tion for Infantile Paralysis are intended for the care of local polio patients, residents of this county also are helping to whip polio nationally by actually preventing pre-venting it before it strikes. These facts were revealed this week by A. E. Whatcott, county chairman for the March of Dimes in Iron County as he set the stage for the drives to be conducted con-ducted throughout the month of January. "Fifty per cent of March of Dimes contributions stay right here to help mend the lives of Iron County Polio patients," he . said. "The other 50 percent goes , to national headquarters to sup- port the vast programs of polio t attack. ; Cedar City Chairman 1 Walter Lowe, appointed March of Dimes chairman for Cedar ? City this week, further emphasiz-t emphasiz-t ed the need for funds this year. 3 "It is estimated," he stated, "that ' out of the national 50 percent $2,700.00 will be used on seien-l tific research in 1955; $2,900,000 on professional education, including in-cluding fellowships and scholarships scholar-ships to train professional people to fight polio more effectively both in the laboratory and in the hospital; $0,000,000 will pay for gamma globulin contracted for iii 1951 but not yet paid for. GG's limited protection is important until vaccine becomes widely available," he concluded. 9,000,000 to Be Vaccinated "This information is what is needed and for what, however, the biL'L'est chunk is the S'.I.OOO.- 1 000 already committed to the purchase of enough Salk vaccine vac-cine to give 9,000,000 people three injections each. This represents a calculated financial risk based upon the hope that the vaccine will be declared effective by the Poliomyelitis Vaccine Evaluation Center in Michigan and licensed for use. "This is how the citizens of j Iron County, by giv ing to the March of Dimes beginning in (January, can help 1o lick polio j before i: strikes," Hie chairmen prod limed. "Now is the time to 'think about it. During the cam- 'paign in January is the time to do something about it." theyj conclud.'d. j i i weee'.et'F:e-e'ewTv:ee.,e ' ' e t y |
