Show Cedar Pony League fill-Stars Vin Tvo Trophies in Dixie Tournament An all-star Pony League baseball base-ball team from Cedar City participated parti-cipated last week in a four-team tournament held in St. George and returned Saturday evening with one victory and one defeat in the two night stand. In the first round of play the Cedar City all-stars walked away with a victory over a Washington Washing-ton county all-star team by a score of 23 to 8. Scoring 12 runs in the first inning of play the Cedar City lads were never in danger behind the pitching of Art Pryor for four innings, and Neil Petty, who finished the game for cedar. Don Robinson was the slugger of the day when he pounded out a home run Into center field with two on in the first inning to help -etup the 12-run advantage. Reed Heywood and Ronnie Adams were the stars in the field against the Washington county nine. Both lads, on short and second sec-ond respectively, pulled down what might have been singles and made outs of them, plus fielding practically errorless all through the game. In the second round of play the Cedar City all-stars ran up against a strong Las Vegas, Nev. nine in the championship game played Saturday evening under the lights. Cedar lost the same 8 to 1 against the Nevadans who were for the most part 15-year-old lads. Cedar's all-stars were all within the 13 and 14 year age limit set up by the national Pony League organization. In the game against Las Ve- gas, although the Cedar all-stars were out hit with the exception of one inning, the fourth, the game was very close. In the fourth inning Las Vegas scored four of its runs on four hits and two errors. Cedar City was able to get men on base but just couldn't seem to bring them home. Throughout Through-out the game 10 men for Cedar City were left on bases, some in ideal scoring position, but they were just not able to get the hits at the right time. The Cedar squad came home with two beautiful trophies, one of them for winning second place in the tournament, and the other the coveted sportsmanship trophy tro-phy for having displayed the best sportsmanship throughout the meet. |
