Show EXCHANGES On looking over the exchanges this week we have been very much in interested interested interested in- in in reading the accounts of the oratorical contests between different classes belonging to the same college and of the interstate contests One of the most important of the latter occurred occurred oc oc- oc in Iowa City Iowa on May 3rd and was wa participated in by Michigan Wisconsin Wisconsin Oberlin Northwestern Chicago Chicago Chicago Chi Chi- cago and Iowa universities The orations which were of a very high order were delivered in the Opera House to a crowded house Michigan taking first honors and second This is the second ti time e that Michigan has won from these same colleges and it speaks well for her school of oratory The inspiring example which our sister universities of the East have hav given us in oratorical work is seconded by the enthusiasm which the University University University sity of California is displaying in deciding upon sending a crack team to the East to compete with Yale Prince- Prince ton Universities of Pennsylvania Chicago Chicago Chicago Chi Chi- cago and Michigan When money was called for was raised inside of twenty minutes The university claims some fine athletes and thinks she is sure of five firsts out of fourteen Whether she gets all she anticipates or not it will be a splendid advertisement for the university and will be worth many times the amount paid out We heartily extend our best wishes to the theU U University of California and hope for forthe forthe forthe the honor of the West she will be victorious The current issue of the Harvard Advocate contains a written well-written story but one which we cannot too strongly condemn not merely because we are opposed to stories of drinking bouts and think them low and would rather see them conspicuous by their absence but because we think they do harm to the college Many people reading such stories as The Unusual Adventure of Donovan and having as they do a avery avery avery very very poor idea of ot college morals will take it as a sample of college life and andas as another reason why young men should not be sent from the influences of home ome to the college where such things are common and are considered the proper thing to do We do not for a moment imagine that the persons who write such stories have been in the conditions conditions conditions con con- in which they describe their heroes but believe that they think that such things should occur and they probably doand that they are the proper reminiscences with which to entertain their friends The sooner this idea is destroyed the better for the seeming as ls aswell aswell well as the actual morals of our great universities The exchanges contain no essays worthy of mention the writers' writers minds all running to telling story-telling the best of which are A Fraternity Pin in the Tar gum Donald in the Indiana St Student Tale of the Olden Time II V and Stories of the Church in Crossville Crossville Crossville Cross- Cross ville in the Harvard Advocate The verse is scarce and of a rather indifferent quality The library and manuscripts of the historian Bancroft have been purchased by the Chicago University for 80 Ex The young lad ladies ies of Wellesley College have ordered an oared eight-oared barge and are going to row too this year It is to be forty-five forty feet long three feet beam and made of Spanish cedar The plan was submitted last February and was approved by the faculty At a business meeting of the Cornell Glee Banjo and Mandolin Clubs last week it was decided that the clubs should make a trip through England Scotland and Ireland They will sail June on the I Their first appearance will be in London July Three concerts in in all will be given here and then the boys will go to the Henley regatta and witness the great race A series of twenty concerts willbe will willbe willbe be arranged in England Scotland and Ireland but the clubs will not make a atour atour tour of the continent They expect to tobe be gone about six weeks returning about the of August t I v vI t I tl n f a au |
